That's a sound take.

Tangent regarding favoritism, can we get some examples?
On recently discussed guys, Tyler Thompson had a fantastic yr this yr compared to last, he was well utilized. Jake Johnson played most TE snaps, though maybe he could have played more. Maybe Hood or Gause though June deserved carries. Defensively I wasn't begging for backups from the prior regime, though the coaches certainly love Leroy Jackson, Will Hardy, Cost and Marcus Allen.
I believe the examples that either Greg or Tommy or maybe it was Jason used back after the Clemson game was that, in particular, there was a considerable double standard for the couple of guys that came from Washington with Steve Belichick, and that there was also a difference in the way that the holdovers from the Mack Brown era were treated relative to the influx of portal recruits that Belichick signed in the spring. I don’t think they shared specific anecdotes or anything, just that it was the general demeanor or feeling in the locker room at that particular point in time. Maybe it changed for the better – I certainly hope it did.

Also flipping recruits from Texas, PSU, FSU and others. I think who leaves through portal will say a lot. But clearly there are lots of players who believe in BB.
Yeah. I agree with points that Carolina recruits itself, but at least the recruiting dept doesn't seem too disarrayed despite all the "shitshow' rumors.

Keep in mind, we flipped a lot of recruits because we drastically outbid their previous school. Don Callahan himself confirmed this. I’m not saying that was wrong of us or anything- just cautioning against reading too much into the ‘why’ of high school recruits signing with us. Vodney Cleveland, for example, was offered a very substantial larger amount by UNC than Texas, and Texas was not willing to increase. Same with the defensive back we flipped from Miami.

We spent almost $12 million I believe on this high school recruiting class. It should not be a stretch for anyone to believe that many of those recruits are here specifically because the financial package they were offered by UNC is more lucrative than the one which they were offered by other schools. I think it would be pretty naïve to think otherwise, actually. Likewise, I also have no doubt that there are recruits in this class who are here altruistically because they want to be coached by someone who was known as the greatest NFL coach of all time. It’s definitely not zero sum.

If we somehow don’t lose any more major contributors beyond Tyler Thompson, and if we somehow start racking up major instant impact portal players in droves at all or most of our positions of greatest need in January, then I’ll think that rumors of a chaotic Carolina Football program might be greatly exaggerated. Until then, there are many flashing warning signs that, to me at least, are acting as a canary in the coal mine.

I still wonder if these "feelings" are desperate guesses at vibes given how tight-lipped everything is. In post game Blaske, Hardy, Shipp and others are all either drinking the Kool aid and brainwashed or they aren't examples of mistreatment. The departure of Caleb Hood was definitely eye-opening and evidence of smoke, I guess.

Yeah, that’s totally fair, it could definitely be guesswork in lieu of having more prolific sources inside the Football office. I definitely acknowledge that could be the case. I kind of feel like people like Ben, Greg, Buck, and Tommy would not peddle innuendo that day didn’t feel at least reasonably confident was in the ballpark of being accurate, but I definitely acknowledge the Intel they were getting may not have been foolproof by any means, especially if the Intel was coming from sources that predate BB and ML at UNC.

"Outsiders" like your HS buddy's info are still pretty credible and damning though.

All this just makes me hope we get a college veteran added as the OC to bring some sense and stability.

Where are you seeing these numbers? Not challenging you I am on on3. How do we know what other schools offered these kids? I did read about the Cleveland guy. Just hard for me to believe kids want to be part of a shithow.

Don Callahan mentioned it multiple times in IC podcasts. I don’t know what types of numbers were talking about, he didn’t mention numbers, but he did say UNC was throwing money around the other school wasn’t willing to match,

That helps. I don't listen to podcasts. Still dint know how he knows. Is that where $12 mill figure came from? Where does that rank us?

It was for a couple of recruits..It was not a comment on overall budget

I mentioned Caleb above in a convo about favoritism, but June was a Mack recruit, and it isn't like Ben Hall was given more opportunity than Gause, June or Caleb.

Schipp, Vari, Paysour, Culliver and Alex Taylor were all given opportunity at WR.

Blaske and Banfield were given opportunity though Tray Greene might not have been.

Johnson played most of the TEs.

Hardy, Allen, Cost and Patterson played a ton.

Leroy Jackson played a bunch as did Tyler Thompson.

At every position other than QB or LB it is hard to see favoritism based on PT. Bryson Coleman played more than Ziglar and Jani Norwood got zero PT, but overall I'm having trouble seeing a pattern on gameday.

You will never convince me that BB did not play the people he thought were best to win. It is clear to me that some inside the program did not like BB and the changes he brought and spread mud. I am sure there was much to criticize. But it is obvious what went on. I am sure the WRAL recap tomorrow will be insightful.

Greg Barnes wrote in an article right after the season ended, before Signing Day, that UNC had spent in excess of $10 million on the high school class we were signing, and that number was prior to Vodney Cleveland flipping from Texas. I believe it was then mentioned on a podcast that we’d spent seven figures to flip Cleveland (I think that morsel of info came from one of the national recruiting guys) so that leads me to believe we spent somewhere between $11-12M on the class total. That’s my speculation, though, admittedly- but at the minimum we know UNC spent over $10M on the class because that’s what Greg reported.

Methinks pretty much anybody could build a good class at Carolina by paying that kind of money. I dont think that takes a GM at all, much less one to be praised for the feat.

I worry Lombardi is grasping at straws and mortgaging our future with 1-2 decent classes. He also seems to be ignoring local players which is not good for the long term success of the program. It also seems like their solution to everything is writing a check instead of building a positive environment.
