UNC Football - on the road to nowhere

Our defense looked pretty bad against the one competent offense we played. I am not sure we have a defense that travels against Big12 teams.
particularly when they run the spread offense.

I did think the defense played decently against TCU until the bottom dropped out and our offense kept either turning the ball over or going 3 and out.

Teams like Charlotte and Richmond are able to pickup 3rd and short on our D. That side might play penalty-free, fundamentally sound ball and be deep across the DL and secondary, but they haven't shown us playmaking studs that could shutdown a P4 offense, and that will be a necessary thing for winning since this O is going to wind up giving away really good field position until something magical happens to both the OL and Gio.

I disagree a bit. I think portal hunting is partly about relationships and he had no time to develop those - our best player from the portal, Dixon was gotten largely due to relationship.

If BB was overly cheap then I might agree but lots of portal action was probably done via back-channeling which takes time to setup.

nah......all these kids care about is $. the 'goat' couldnt score them and wont be able to score them....esp after he fails to win more than 4 games this yr.

unc fb fanbase has been con'd to the tune of lots more than $50+ million by the 'goat'

We outbid Oklahoma for Mateer and he chose them because his ex-OC was there - relationship > $ in that case.

No doubt relationships count a lot
Belichick started with Zero relationships But he and his Mgr are developing a vibe that hopefilly will attract relationships Yea The Goat part heads that potential charm to players

Oklahoma pays Brent Venable $7.75 million and its assistants $7.15 million; so, they pay $14.9 million/year. That’s pretty damn close to $15 million a year.

fail! this isnt 1990

does okie have the 'goat' and paying him and staff almost 15 mil a yr?

no excuses
You said "nah......all these kids care about is $"

But Mateer is an example refuting your stance. It is't always about $. It is about money, relationships, prestige of programs, gameday atmosphere, coaching name or any combos of these.

So OGtruthurts, based on the facts (see above) regarding Mateer and many other players, do you change your stance regarding failure to land talent given BB was hired Dec 11th so had no time to back-channel or build relationships (outside of House and Dixon)?

I don't think we can judge the winter haul (unless there is proof we were stingy at the wrong time). Universally everyone said the Spring portal was a desert, but that's a starting point for judgement. Simpson and Gbayor are obviously good ones. D'Antre and Isiah aren't world-beating, but they're young and they at the second most expensive position in CFB. Jakai Moore was badly needed. The rest of the group is either meh or TBD, but again, it is Spring.

A place for criticism IMO is letting our returning Amare Campbell and Beau Atkinson go though. We could really use both of those guys. At least we kept Blaske and Banfield who both entered the winter portal (Amare did too, though he stuck around for spring anyway)

Folks complained about UNC taking too long to hire a coach, saying they wouldn't have enough time to get the top-end talent in the portal. Now they're complaining that the late-hired coach, who wouldn't have enough time to land top-end talent in the portal, doesn't have top-end talent from the portal. Some folks to just like to complain, I guess 🤷‍♀️

Our game kicks off at 3:30 EDT in Florida on Fox.
But before that I'm interested in watching some of the SMU vs. TCU game which starts at 12:30 EDT on ESPN2.
We don't play SMU this season - but we obviously play several common opponents all year long (TCU, Clem, Cal., Cuse, Stan, Wake). I'm curious to see if TCU handles SMU as easily as they did UNC. After that, I'll be curious to see how SMU does against Syracuse on Oct 4th, as we will see Cuse at their place on Halloween.

Yes, I know transitivity may not be a thing in college football - but how common opponents do may be a bit of a barometer going forward. I do know that the transitive property holds pretty strong in High School football. For example: if Watauga beats the snot out of Ashe County 56-0 and your H.S. barely sgueaked by Ashe... guess what? There's a 99% chance your gonna lose to Watauga... and probably by a lot.

My point is obvious - if SMU plays well today at TCU (and maybe even beats them?) and then Syracuse beats the snot out of SMU... I'm not looking forward to going to upstate N.Y. on Halloween.

To be fair, if UNC wasn’t always a perpetual shitshow, and if we didn’t have our Chancellor and BOT running their own search independently of the athletic director who was running *his* own search, we’d have hired a coach a lot sooner, and it would have almost certainly been one who would have been able to make hay in the winter transfer portal.
