I like the pieces they've assembled and if Roy had this group, I'd feel very confident that by January this team would be formidable. Hubert just hasn't shown me any reason to believe he can maximize roster talent.

Remove Luka from this roster, and.... yikes. If you're Hubert, and Luka can't play, you're probably getting fired....
I like Carolina's depth this season, particularly at the 3. I'm excited to watch Bogavac play for Carolina, and I'm confident he will, but it seems Carolina has the shooting, ball handling, size, and versatility to fill that position. I'm looking forward to seeing how his pro experience helps the team.

Not saying that you're wrong but ,as I pointed out over the summer, if that happens, why isn't that as much or more on the director of basketball operations or whatever the title is and not on Hubert?
You're absolutely right. How this has reached late October without resolution is absurd. I think the bulk of the blame should be on the South Bldg., but they're not the ones on the hot seat.

The basketball side had to think that this would be wrapped up by now...

I don't really get excited about the start of college basketball like I used to. I have no idea what players on teams other than UNC, outside of a few of our own transfers. I have no interest in the ACC as a conference now. A lot of what I enjoyed about college basketball is a thing of the past now. I'm still interested to see how things unfold for UNC, will watch all their games as much as I can. And I'll be interested in NCAA tournament (interest level depending on UNC's success). But I've just accepted that this is how things are now.

The blame for the situation with Luka’s eligibility definitely falls on people above Hubert. Unfortunately for Hubert, I don’t think that matters.

If worst case scenario happens and Luka can’t play and the team goes on to struggle this season, I can’t see UNC saying “well we were a bubble team yet again but if Hubert had Luka we would have definitely been much better, so let’s give him a pass for another season”.

Same.

Agree with many other posters. This summer I consumed next to nothing about UNC bb. With all the things combined - stretch of mostly mediocrity, watering down of college sports (BB most of all IMO), no team continuity, a lame duck coaching I don’t trust, and then all the changes at IC on top of that…just haven’t had any excitement about this year. I’ll still watch all the games but man I miss feeling hopeful about UNC BB. If you’d told me 10 years ago I’d feel more positive about the Bills and the Cubs than UNC hoops I would have said you were insane. The Heels used to be the one team I followed that I could have high hopes for every year.

I'm, excited. While I hate many of the changes I love the game. I plan on attending some mid-major games of teams that aren't marquee programs in fact.

And I have always enjoyed Division III contests for the absolute purity of them.

Unless the issue is something that Tanner/Davis should have foreseen, I can totally see the PTB at Carolina saying that.

Yep.

The other teams I pull for are...Carolina Football, Seattle Mariners, LV Raiders.

That's obviously not a murderer's row of success.

Carolina Basketball was the one team I cheer for that traditionally could be counted on to be at least good and often better than that.

At least I still have Carolina Baseball. 🤷‍♂️

Along with women's basketball, men and women's soccer, men's lacrosse, women's field hockey and women's tennis. Heels just aren't consistent anymore in men's basketball and football.

I certainly cheer for all of those sports/teams, but they don’t really move me the way that the ones I mentioned do.

pretty much my feelings as well. never thought I would have had such little interest over the summer and never would I have imagined that the Heels weren't even in any serious contention for any of the elite, top 10 high school talent. we just aren't the it place anymore. sad.

Yeah, same here. It is just frustrating how those have been pretty successful lately and men's basketball and football have been mostly floundering.

Count me in as not particularly enthused about this upcoming UNC team and season, which has little to do with how good I think they can or cannot be. But the changes to the sport haven’t really made me less interested in college bball as a whole

I generally don’t care how every other team is constructed. The other teams and players provide more or less the same level of entertainment as pre-NIL. What’s worse than NIL to me is the conference re-alignments

Re: Luka Bogavac's eligibility. Academia works in mysterious ways but more than in anything, in mysterious timetables. I suspect that there is a final hoop in his full instatement...he's already taking classes, the NCAA doesn't care about previous professional play, so I'm imagining that there is a committee that needs to meet to put the final stamp of approval on his admissability as an incoming foreign student. There is a high likelihood that said committee hasn't had its October or 2nd time in the semester or whatever gathering and the academicians (who can be a very stubborn lot and are often committeed to death) aren't willing to call a special session to vote on this matter (Or perhaps have some by-law that prohibits such a thing even). Crazy things like how long it has been since he attended school (4 years?) and how that affects any credits that he brings from any European institution that he attended (or how his coursework will be designated disciplinarily) are what I'm imagining need approval.

Example, The Faculty Athletics Committee last met on October 14. They do not meet again until November 13. I think Bogavac was cleared by the NCAA on October 20. That committee hasn't met since then. Unfortunately, if he has to wait until 11/14 then he will miss the Kansas game (11/7).

That could be completely off and a different committee is in charge of this matter. If it is, for example, the Educational Policy Committee then their next meeting is October 30 (They last met September 30).

No idea if he plays tomorrow night in the exhibition vs BYU or not and even if he does I don't know it that will actually tell us anything about his eligibility.

This is how I read things, but you explained it much better than I could have.

(I accidentally put this on the wrong thread, so I'm moving it over.)

I've been thinking about this Luka thing and I've wondered if this might be the issue...

According to published reports, Luka has done 2 years of college-level work while a professional basketball player since graduating HS.

When the NCAA restores a players amateur eligibility after playing professional sports, they typically not only reinstate eligibility, they often do so with a "number of years" determination as to how many years of eligibility the player has left.

Carolina has been referencing Luka as a Junior and so I wonder if the NCAA has reinstated Luka with 2 years of eligiblity remaining.

However, if enough of Luka's classes didn't meet Carolina requirements for transfer, I'm wondering if there could be a situation where Luka passes admissions to the University and where the NCAA grants eligibility, but Luka doesn't have enough transferable credits to be considered a Junior in good standing for athletic purposes (based against NCAA standards on progress toward graduation). If that is the case, would he have to be held out until he had suitable credits to be meet NCAA eligiblity requirements toward graduation?

And it may have been that UNC had to wait until the NCAA ruled on Luka's eligibility reinstatement to see how many years of eligiblity the NCAA would provide before knowing if this would be an actual issue or not.

To be clear, I have no inside knowledge here and this is all conjecture, but as I thought about the situation this morning, this potential situation gave me pause.
