Don’t forget we also had JamesOn Curry in that 2004 recruiting class until we rescinded his scholarship due to a felony drug conviction. He turned out to be a very good college player, but we did just fine without him.

Of course Curry ended up going to OK State and played with another NC native who ended up being a very good college player: Mario Boggan.
I don't think of Curry the same way that I think of Smith because I think of Curry as a bench player his freshman year who isn't going to demand a lot of minutes on a talented team. Smith, on the other hand, was an elite recruit and I'm not sure he'd have handled not being a starter/major contributor as well as Curry would have or as well as Marvin did.

That sounds promising
Yep. But ultimately I don't doubt Evans' talent and ability to contribute at this level. I think it remains to be seen, though, whether the role we're asking Evans to play - a more challenging one than he played at CSU - will be one he's well-suited to play. And there's no real backup plan (unless you consider "Seth Trimble as full-time PG" a realistic possibility, which I don't) so the answer to whether Evans can play that role is going to go a long way towards determining how our season goes.

X reports have freshman CGs Dixon and Denis looking good so far in workouts - for what that's worth. That, however, doesn't solve the PG depth issue.

I hope they look good against good competition. Are they competing against good opponents?

I remember for YEARS UNC football players talking up how good the opposing “room” was…..DB’s vs WR’s……OL v. DL…..LB’s……RB’s…..then, we’d suck.

I have my doubts about the 2025-26 UNC hoops team.

Tyler Zeller was around for the summer scrimmages and speaks pretty honestly in this episode of Locked On Tar Heels

Of course what you think about what he says is all dependent on what you think of him.

I’m not sure what the threshold is going to be for retaining Hubert, since we are going to have a new athletics director, but in my mind I need to see UNC, at a minimum, be a consistent top 25 ranked team and a qualifier for the top 4 double bye in the ACC tournament. I think those are realistic goals for this team, and enables them to get a favorable seed in the NCAA tournament. Anything short of that, and I think we need to make a change.

Make the tourney and beat dook at least once.

I'm just trying to understand how it was fair for a team featuring Tyler Zeller, Cam Johnson, and Justin Jackson to play against the current kids. I don't care how long Tyler or Justin Jackson have been retired. Justin's NBA career didn't go as planned but he was 1AA and then played for a few years. Cam Johnson has a 200M+ contract or something. Tyler had a long career as a journeyman.

Like Zeller said, Heels did a 180 with not having enough bigs to not having much with the backcourt now. Trimble is really the only one that has shown he can step up and score at times, but the big question is Evans at the point. Maybe they can get enough with Henri, Stevenson, Wilson and Trimble to be good. Luka could be a X-factor, too.

Luka is going to be a point forward, I think. He will be solid. Evans is going to be good. I'm not sure why everyone is so skeptical of him.
Because he has never been a true point guard. I don't think anyone is questioning his talent but being the point man is much more than that.

He was the point guard all last year for Colorado State and they had a better year than us. Yes, he only averaged 3.1 assists, so he is not a Kendall Marshall/Elliot Cadeau type PG, but he has plenty of experience playing PG. Plus, we will have many, many excellent passers on the team, including Veesaar and Bogavac, so I am not worried about assists (plus, Hubert's teams have generally not been very assist heavy).
