Our inability to get a big man in that cycle or the next cost us Chris Paul.
I very well may be misremembering this but my recollection was that Paul wanted to come to UNC but we didn’t have a scholarship for him…

My memory is that he wanted to come to UNC early in his recruitment but we were tight on scholarships and slow-played him & tried to get him to possibly walk on. We also had Felton committed/on-campus as a PG and so another PG in the following class wasn't a priority.

Once he blew up into truly major recruit, he decided that Carolina wasn't the place for him and we were out of consideration.

Right. Because we needed to hold out a scholarship for a big man. Our class that year was Reyshawn. It was supposed to be Reyshawn + big man.

Damion Grant and Byron Sanders were not the answer, and they were holding down two scholarships. If we'd had one free, we'd have gotten CP3.

The biggest wildcard is the staff. When you go into a year and you have a completely different roster and a wildcard staff, it’s very hard to know what to expect. Davis seems to be grand slam or strikeout.

We took Felton and the guy won a title.
Yeah, I look at not getting CP3 much like I do JR Smith turning pro at the last second and not coming to Chapel HIll. I was bummed when it happened, but since we ended up winning a national championship, I'm kinda glad it turned out like it did.

It’s a new world. I’m going to believe this team could be good. They have some, what looks like, nice pieces but who knows?

Will need a go-to guy to emerge.
I have a feeling our euro guy is going to be really good and will play multiple roles for us.

Are you reading this from IC or what is the source of this concern?
Not IC. Prefer not to be too specific, but let's call it Coach talk.

Lack of continuity is the amount of turnover from one year to the next. You're always going to have some turnover in college ball, and in this new landscape that becomes a bigger issue for most teams. Some coaches are great at assembling teams on the run, others are not. It's a lot easier to have consistent team culture in a program with continuity.

IIRC, we got Jawad after missing on James White and David Lee (reportedly at the time Jawad was holding out on a MD commitment for a UNC offer).

Similarly, Scott had a back-up UNC offer if we missed on DuJuan Wagner & Julius Hodge (maybe one other?), which we did.

I followed Jawad’s recruitment more closely in part b/c in Ohio he had played with/knew a HS sophomore (or frosh?) phenom named LeBron James. I recall Jawad being asked about any insight in to LeBron’s recruitment and he said something like “man, he ain’t going to college”.

PS — Spellcheck kept changing “Jawad” to “Jews” or “Jewad” — Let me know if I missed correcting one.
Doherty stopped recruiting Hodge. The intel was that Hodge was very interesting in coming to UNC. Going to school a short distance away was his consolation.

Doherty did recruit David Lee pretty hard. I don’t recall us ever being in serious contention for Wagner.

ETA: Hodge committed to State in November 2000, after UNC had landed all three of the recruits it picked up in the HS class of 2001 (Manuel, Jawad, Scott). NO JOKING, ST. RAY’S HODGE TABS N.C. STATE

Also, while it doesn’t get into much detail, here is a little article where Hidge says he would have gone to UNC if Gut didn’t retire: NC State Basketball Gem Posts Wild Revelation About UNC Recruitment

Continuity is a luxury for the minority of CBB teams in 2025.

I take a report like this the same way I do a glowing summer report…not too seriously.

It was before camps over the summer. I'll probably loop back to check with my peeps to see how they're feeling post summer. Thing is, these are some of the biggest HD backers you can imagine.

Don’t forget we also had JamesOn Curry in that 2004 recruiting class until we rescinded his scholarship due to a felony drug conviction. He turned out to be a very good college player, but we did just fine without him.

Of course Curry ended up going to OK State and played with another NC native who ended up being a very good college player: Mario Boggan.
