I thought Tyson moved well enough to play at this level. He certainly used his size and athleticism to get rebounds. He's not likely to be a great defender, but I think he can be effective. But he's absolutely got to shoot with no fear. His hesitancy behind the three point line was the only thing that bothered me (and apparently Hubert as well), but it could just be first game jitters.
Seemed like his rebounds came his way more so than him owning them. I didn’t see any grit from him yet. I’m not concerned about his shot, but he seemed a step slow to everything on both sides of the ball. Hopefully he’ll get up to speed with more games at this level under his belt.

But if this team is going to make a deep run then the forwards are going to have to defend and rebound with relentless tenacity. Including Tyson.

I think he only took six threes all year and only hit one.

It's hard to recall many more offensively challenged freshman given all the other tools he possessed

If his soph to jr leap is what his fresh to soph leap was (or half of what we saw last night) it's going to be a really fun year

For all the talk of college sports not being what they used to be, kids like Seth (and Jalen) still exist

Jackie. Leaky. Henson as a freshman. Byron Sanders basically his whole career but especially as a freshman.

I didn’t get a chance to tune into this game but I’m curious about these preseason exhibitions. I know they have been a thing for awhile now but I think this is the first year that they’ve been televised like this, right? How close did last night feel to an actual regular season game in terms of intensity? I couldn’t really get a feel for the flow of the game just watching some of the extended highlights.

If you're expecting Tyson to be a Harrison Ingram clone you're going to be disappointed. He just isn't the same kind of player.

It seemed like a totally normal regular season game to me, their crowd was into it, felt like the real thing.

My first time seeing him in live action last night... so reserving judgement but those were basically my takeaways

A few of those rebounds were off missed free throws and not as easily reeled in as you'd hope. Just seemed shockingly slow and not fluid in his motions

I don't doubt he can play the shooter role but definitely concerned it's not much more than that

I think we are going to have the offensive firepower to compete with and beat anybody. I’m worried that rebounding is going to be a liability, and that our lack of size 1-5 will be something that just flat out gets us beat from time to time when teams have bigger, stronger, more physical guards and/or forwards. It will definitely be a tough pill to swallow at times to see a Carolina team getting bullied on the back boards, but again I do think we are going to have the offensive firepower to play with and beat anyone.

I’m hopeful that fans don’t have a collective conniption if and when we lose two or three or four games before the new year. We have probably the toughest out of conference schedule I’ve ever seen UNC play, which is really saying something. There’s a good chance we will play preseason number 1, number 2, number 3, number 5, number 21, and number 22 all before Christmas.

But I think this team will do really well in the ACC. There is not a single team in the league we cannot and should not beat, and outside of our customary two games against Duke, we only play the preseason 3, 4, and 5 once apiece. So as brutal as the out of conference schedule is, the league schedule is pretty manageable. What I’m looking for this year is for UNC to essentially maintain being a top 10 or so type squad throughout, win a couple of those signature out of conference opportunities (the one I want the most is against Alabama at home), and be in contention for a top 3 seed line opportunity in the NCAA tournament in March and to be playing basketball on the second weekend of the tournament again. I think those are all realistic and attainable goals for this team.

The frosh and the transfers struggled a bit which is to be expected...no big deal

Trimble,EC, and Washington were impressive.

It was only an early season exhibition game, but winning on the road against a decent team without the ACC POY indicates to me that this team is going to be fun to watch develop over the course of the season.

Re: Tyson

Folks are talking about Tyson having to adjust to a new level of competition. He came from Belmont in the Missouri Valley Conference.
That's Drake, Bradley, SIU, Missouri St., N. Iowa, Belmont, Indiana State, Murray State, Valparaiso, Illinois State, UIC, and Evansville.

Memphis plays in the American Athletic Conference. That's Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Memphis, N. Texas, East Carolina, Tulsa, Tulane, Temple, Wichita State, Rice, and UTSA.

Is the AAC a significantly better conference than the MVC?

Nope, not sure why you’d leap to that conclusion.

What I’m hoping for is a smaller version of Manek. But Manek was tough as nails. That toughness is what I’m going to be looking for out of Tyson, and what the team will need in addition to his shooting.

Also Manek’s release was insanely fast, and he adapted very well and immediately to the speed of the ACC. Based on last nights evidence, Cade doesn’t come in so nearly formed and has a lot of work to do. My expectations are low but I also don’t think he’s a critical piece.

Lubin on the other hand is a needed player and also looked almost as out of sorts. Bad hands, poor judgment. We don’t need the low BB IQ of Withers compounded.

Just FYI, for those not able to watch live, the replay is available on the ESPN app using your cable log-in.

Can't wait to see how they will be with RJ back. Trimble was awesome. Cadeau played well. Washington contributed. Withers seems to try to do too much sometimes and forces things. I don't think the freshmen and transfers are used to the speed of the game being faster. Hopefully, that will get better with more games.

What I mean is that not every player comes with "grit" or "relentless intensity" baked in, and not every player can simply flip that switch. Tyson is not, and never will be, as physical as Ingram (or Manek for that matter). He needs to be the best version of himself, not the best version of someone else.

This.

I also don't recall that Manek was an immediate star. More importantly, RJ being in the line up might take some of the perimeter defensive pressure off him and let him find his rhythm.

You’re the only guy talking about Ingram. Why, I’m not sure. Tyson is a completely different player and that should be obvious. Water is wet.

If Tyson’s shooting is going to keep him on the floor, then he’ll need to show the kind of toughness that Manek did in a similar role. Otherwise a lineup with him in it will suffer on the boards and defensively.
