There is no "current dumpster fire".
Look, man, if Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky had 5 losses before Christmas, it’d be described as a dumpster fire. Comes with the blue blood territory. It’s also the worst record and defensive #’s at this point in a season since 8-20.

It’s a little less a dumpster fire after yesterday. But they easily could have lost that game. Credit to them for fighting back (again), but I think it’s just that things happened to work out for them this time. I don’t see where anything was a cathartic breakthrough or anything.

Try to rattle off several in a row, find some confidence, figure out how to play with 4 guards, and see where we are in a month.

Davis shot 39.8% 3FG% last season, which was ranked 201 among qualifiers. That doesn't seem "ridiculous".

How many in the top 200 shot almost 8 threes a game as the team’s primary scoring option?

Genuinely curious, as I think it provides a lot of context to just how good he was last season

Catch and shoot / wide open 3s had to be in the 50s. Probably the biggest difference from last year

Jackson is electric, but the UCLA game was only the 2nd game this season that Carolina scored more points than they allowed with Jackson on the floor. His defense will need to continue to improve.

I watch him on defense and it’s not good. But it will get better

Not like anyone besides Seth is doing much on that end

Maybe they need to try more of the 4 guard line up

You have a low bar for “dumpster fire”.

The season isn’t a catastrophe (top 30ish), it’s just been disappointing.

Disappointing, dumpster fire, catastrophe, it’s all just semantics at this point. The reality is that we have a talented, capable, but ultimately flawed team with a lot of season in front of it but not much room for error.

Yesterday was one of the most encouraging and relieving wins I’ve seen in a long time. An L there and we would have probably needed to win the ACCT to make the tournament. We still only have a small handful of slip ups left and need to at minimum split against Dook to make the tournament, but I feel much better about those prospects now than I did before the game yesterday.

Enjoy the ride.

Reed Sheppard, UK 52.1%
Will Tshetter, Mich 51.9%
Kerwin Walton, Tx Tech 47.8%
Cade Tyson, Belmont 46.5%
Etc

RJ Davis wasn't "ridiculous" last season from 3, but he has been so far this season.

As donbosco pointed out above, when Davis' shots are removed, the rest of the team has a better 3FG% this season than last season. Davis is struggling. Rather than lazily blaming "coaching", maybe we should look at actual player performance. I'm not blaming RJ Davis, I'm not criticizing him as a player, I'm glad he's a Tar Heel and I want him taking the shots, but I want last season's Davis. Something ain't right with him, and for him, the team, and all of us, I hope he gets it figured out.

It's more than just Trimble. Powell has been surprisingly good defensively, and Withers, for all his inconsistency, has been good defensively.

I'm excited to see Jackson become a better defender.

If Carolina lost to Elon, that would be a dumpster fire. All 5 losses are in quad 1, along with 2 q1 wins. This team is a lot closer to 10-2 with 5 q1 wins than to "dumpster fire".

Crazy that top 4 contains one current Tar Heel and one former Tar Heel.
