United Healthcare CEO shot and killed

Whatever this dude’s motivations, the police presence to take custody of him was obscene and will only encourage people who already support the killer’s demented ideation.

Yep. Lot of people wanted to see their face on TV.
I tend to think it was more about them wanting to give the impression that their massive and highly coordinated manhunt is what brought him in, and not a McDonald’s employee. The guy made them look like fools for several days, and this was their showy attempt at erasing that.

I think the presence is more of a deterrence to the people that are comparing this guy to Jesus and are actively calling for anyone who has wealth to be slaughtered (just check Reddit if you don’t believe me). Probably to prevent people from attempting to “rescue” their hero.

Good essay about health insurance issues:

It popped in my email box this morning. I used to follow Tangle but stopped back before the election so I was surprised this one came through. Tangle works very hard to give a fair overview from the right and the left regarding issues of the day.

Sure. That’s why the mayor is there. In case things get hot and dirty.

r/ThatsInsane - UnitedHealth made over $22 billion in profit in 2023
UHC made over $22 Billon. BILLION in profit last year and lead the nation in rejections and denied prior authorizations. This guy is going to get more popular before this is over.
1. fwiw uhc has two businesses, united health care and Optum, which is not health insurance. the profits are split pretty evenly between the two. i dont know if other insurers have a similar side business. if not, then comparing profits is apples to oranges.

2. here's a line from the "risks" section annual financial report that explains the problem:

If we fail to develop and maintain satisfactory relationships with health care payers, physicians, hospitals and otherservice providers, our business could be materially and adversely affected.

note the absence of patients or members from that list. almost nobody with united health insurance is choosing to use united health insurance (maybe it's constrained for some people whose employers give them two options but its not a free market). someone else makes that decision. so they cater to someone else. as long as patients are 3rd party beneficiaires of employer-insurer contracts, pateints are going to get screwed.

i guarantee the system would be better with a) a mandate to buy insurance; b) everyone buying their own plans; c) retention of obamacare standards for required coverage and d) subsidies to make a) feasible. that might not be the best system we could design but it would be better than this.

Optum is UHCs prescription service. Pretty sure that usage is mandatory. It might not technically be an insurance company but it exists to profit from the medical care of UHCs insureds.

Yes, another way to make money.

My personal experience is that since they split off prescription drug coverage from my primary medical coverage it cost more, and it my drugs no longer count toward my deductible.

When I had UHC I got meds from Optum (a couple expensive) and Walgreens (little to no co-pay).
