So they didn’t “steal” any oil, which was in the ground in their country. How the fuck does that make it “our oil?”
I think the argument is that we had a contract saying our oil companies will pay you $X for your oil and also build infrastructure like wells and pipelines. The companies make this deal with one administration, often but not always with kickbacks and bribes. A new administration comes in and voids the deal taking the equipment that our companies paid for and tell them to pound sand.

Not sure that's what happened in Venezuela but that is the typical story. So if that is what happened, that is Trump's claim of taking "our" oil that we paid for while Venezuela will claim the oil was stolen in the first place by the oil companies and the corrupt guys in the last administration.

Can't believe we still cite the Monroe doctrine like its a real thing. It wasn't a treaty signed by European powers or South American countries.

Even if it were, the deal was Europe stays out of the Western Hemisphere while we stay put of European affairs. The Spanish American war effectively nullified it and if that doesn't cross the line surely two world wars would qualify as intervention in European affairs. We should be teaching this stuff in high school.

But in no way does that make "our oil."

And Trump is completely full of shit if he thinks US oil companies are going to rush into Venezuela to flood more high sulfur oil into a market where light sweet crude is selling for $60 per barrel.

Likely so
One thing is for sure-it is not our oil

Then why is the market up 650+ this am?

100% correct.

It's not profitable unless the US ponys up $100-200B to rebuild the infrastructure and refining.

We are not America anymore.
Well NATO should be interested in our taking over another country-as in we are not supposed to
And lastly-of course-this "taking over" will be a cluster duck . Heard just now we killed 37 cuban soldiers in our raid
I assume there are Chinese soldiers there etc etc

Venezuela nationalized its oil industry in
1976under President Carlos Andrés Pérez, creating the state-owned company Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) to take control from foreign companies like Exxon, Gulf, and Mobil, aiming to control its vast resources, though the process involved compensation and later led to disputes, with PDVSA facing production declines and international sanctions impacting its operations today.

I knew Chavez had a role in this so I Googled it. This is Google AI.

Hugo Chávez nationalized significant portions of Venezuela's oil industry, particularly in 2007, by taking majority control of Orinoco Belt projects from foreign companies like ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, shifting them to joint ventures where the state-owned PDVSA held a 60% stake, aiming to exert state control over its natural resources, a move that led to international disputes and sanctions.
  • Reversal of Privatization: Chávez reversed policies from the 1990s that had reopened the industry to foreign investment, seeking to regain full state control.

nothing since '76?

"We" (the United States) didn't have any contract with Venezuela; if anyone did, the oil companies themselves did. Some of those companies probably don't even exist anymore. It's entirely appropriate for the US government to protect the interests of US companies to some extent, but that's pretty obviously not what Trump is doing here (since anyone would obviously be hard-pressed to connect the dots between using Delta Force to kidnap the head of a foreign country to bring him here to stand trial on drug charges with trying to facilitate resolution of some contract dispute over oil infrastructure).

What's next - are we going to send in the Seals to kidnap Putin until he agrees to pay us back for the money we spent pursuant to the Russian Famine Relief Act in 1919?
