When I was much younger I used to love reading about UFO sightings and watching the UFO segments on the old "Unsolved Mysteries" NBC show with Robert Stack - that was a great series - and reading about famous UFO sightings in the USA and watching the X-Files and such. I've become much more skeptical over the years, but it seems that people claiming to see UFOs is being increasingly replaced with people claiming to see strange drones that no one says they can identify. My guess is that it's as much about psychology and people's willingness to believe weird things are happening (like Iranian drones freely flying over the USA without our government knowing about it, lol) as it does with anything real or substantive. Could be just some hoaxers with drones playing a prank on gullible Jerseyites for kicks.

Anomaly linked a video yesterday that thoroughly debunked this whole thing. It was at 8: 53. There are all sorts of reasons to call bullshit on this. Are they still showing these "enemy " drones with the super stealthy flashing lights?
I had a similar thought when watching a news story about the drones. One of the objects was pretty clearly a fixed-wing aircraft that did not look unusual in any way. There is so much air traffic in the NJ/NY area that these things are probably pretty easy to explain away. People are just paying attention to the sky more due to the news and social media coverage and are noticing things that they previously wouldn’t have paid any mind to.

From my reading of UFO history, the same thing happened with UFO sightings - if there was a wave of UFO sightings in an area then people would start reporting to the press and Air Force and local police that they were seeing things that later turned out to be perfectly normal objects, including airplanes.

With tensions rapidly rising over an apparent drone invasion sweeping some states, New Jersey Senator Andy Kim set out to seek answers.

The Democrat did a ride-along with local cops to get to the bottom of the mystery with a “deeper analysis” of the growing perplexing drama. …

Alarm has been building for weeks with the numbers of drone sightings soaring with no explanation.

As well as New Jersey, drones have been spotted in been spotted in California, Massachusetts, Florida, Wyoming, Maryland and New York. …”

(Cont’d)

“… He also shared a video showing lights skidding across the night sky near Round Valley Reservoir at 9:20pm.

“I don’t discount others may have seen actual drone activity, and not all I saw is fully explained by flight paths, but much of it was,” said the concerned politico.

“And I think the process through which I got confirmation points to the kind of explanation we need from gov authorities to address the public’s concern.” …”

'This has gone too far': Drones temporarily closed runways at NY airport, governor says

“New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in a Saturday statement said runways were closed at the New York Stewart Airport for about an hour Friday night due to nearby drone activity and called on Congress to strengthen oversight of drones.

Hochul's statement comes among a rash of reported drone sightings, concern from some politicians and reassurances from federal agencies. …”

What’s the likelihood this turns out to be true on a few accounts, but grossly explained by mass hysteria?

Admittedly, I’ve only read a couple of articles.
Very close to 100%. You really think some evil superpower that is intent on spying on us is using FAA compliant lighting on their super secret fleet of highly illuminated drones? Or the martians that decided to come visit have the same rules regarding placement of red and green lights on their spacecraft that we have on all of our aircraft? It is hysteria.

I do think this story is indicative of a shift in legacy media decisions about what to cover, too — if it is getting major engagement on social media, why should legacy media be left out, no matter how ridiculous? They are bleeding viewers/readers and need a new model to avoid extinction.
