“… “You’re running in the Democratic primary against U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and there’s been a lot of discourse around her electability, and some would say that is code for they don’t think a Black woman can win statewide,” “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin told Talarico during his appearance on the show Monday.

Talarico said during that appearance he would fully back her if she became the nominee and believed she could win statewide in Texas, calling her a “friend” and saying he had “deep love and respect for her.”

Meanwhile, Punchbowl News reported last week, citing a top Crockett supporter, that the congresswoman’s campaign is planning a rollout of attack ads targeting Talarico.…”
“…
The primary took a surprising turn this week when a TikTok user alleged in a series of videos on her account that Talarico described Allred as a “mediocre Black man” and Crockett as a “formidable” and “intelligent Black woman” during a private conversation last month. The influencer said she didn’t have a recording of the conversation but defended the accuracy of it.

The comments angered Allred, who slammed the Texas state lawmaker and said he would endorse Crockett in the race.

“First of all, let me just give you some free advice, James: If you want to compliment Black women, just do it. Just do it,” Allred said in a video. “Don’t do it while also tearing down a Black man.”

Talarico in a statement argued the remarks mischaracterized his comments, saying he was referring solely to Allred’s campaign strategy.

“It’s unfortunate that at the start of Black History Month, this is what we’re facing,” Crockett said in her statement supporting Allred.…”

If true, then fuck Crockett. That’s the absolute last thing Dems need right now.

I am a big Crockett fan, but she should not be like Bernie was in 2016. She should drop out and endorse Talarico. Let him lose to the GQPer instead of her.
I like her too and think she has an important role in the caucus. My doubt about her has always been how much of her motive is self promotion. This raises my concern. We need a few attack dogs going after the Pubs. But they need to be smart enough to keep that pointed in the right direction.

I agree

I checked the latest polls and they show Crockett and Talarico doing about as well against the GQPer candidates...trailing by 3-5 points.

I think turnout will determine the outcome.

It's a long way to go before November so I'm not sure what the landscape will look like come November. If Talarico is the candidate will minority groups turn out for him ? Will Talarico inspire young voters to vote for a moderate ?

I hope so...

I suspect Talarico’s religiousness and origin story in South Texas could be a big pivot characteristic for a lot of the Rio Grande Valley.

In my example, Crockett is being Bernie and Talarico is being Hillary Clinton
Simple test:

Candidate A: “Look at me. Look who I am. Look what I represent.”

Candidate B: “Look at the system. Look who it’s screwing.”

If you think A is Bernie and B is Hillary, you learned the wrong lesson from 2016. Your example doesn’t hold because Talarico and Crockett are essentially tied at this point. Don’t confuse tone for politics.

Tone is really important, though. Especially if you're serious about competing in a state like Texas.

I’m genuinely trying to understand how you’re using the term “moderate.”

If it’s policy, which policies place him closer to the center than Crockett?

If it’s tone, does that mean style is being confused with ideology?

If it’s identity or background (religion, race, biography), I want to be explicit about that too. Genuine questions.

In my example, Clinton was a moderate compared to Bernie. Clinton's policies were not significantly different than Bernie's.

As a liberal I would gladly vote for Talarico. Will minority groups and young voters turn out for Talarico in November ? I hope so.

Right…but then you proceeded to map Talarico onto Clinton and Crockett onto Bernie. That’s what I was getting at in my first response to you. I think the relationship actually runs the other way, if anything.

Talarico isn’t “moderate” coded to me. And I guess I’m still “young” to an extent. He talks about the rigged system, billionaires, etc. Crockett is light on policy in comparison. But it seems you think Talarico is moderate. I’m asking what gives you that perception. Because his policies don’t scream moderate. His tone, whiteness, and religiousness may make him come across that way though, which would be a boon in a general.

In terms of minorities, Talarico is romping with Hispanic voters in polls. Probably related to Crockett saying that Latinos have a “slave mentality.” But Talarico has also explicitly leaned into this support by running Spanish language ads and campaigning with a Tejano music star.

If you’re worried that Black voters won’t turn out in a general for Talarico because of this controversy, then I would say to not worry about that lol. No one will remember this in November if he’s the nominee, and very few people outside of political junkies even know about it now.

I was comparing Crockett to Bernie in her plan to attack Talarico much like Bernie did in the 2016 primary. The link below indicates that there is little if any difference in where Crockett and Talarico stand on the issues and there is little difference in where they are in the polls vs GQPer candidates.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think Crockett should drop out and campaign for Talarico at this point. That will burnish her standing in the Democratic party and she will not be set up to be blamed when Talarico loses in November.
