I don't think you can keep Davis based on his character and the type of person he is. While that is meaningful, it doesn't override poor performance. That said, there is still some season left to play and recruiting left to do, so I think we have to see how that plays out before we can make a call. If we miss the tournament again and don't sign any impact recruits it's going to be difficult to keep him. With a bare roster and bad results we would just be setting him up for a lame duck year and more frustration with a Carolina legend. This is the down side to keeping it in the family.

I posted this in the main basketball thread. This is a great summary of what's wrong with the team, especially on offense, and why coaching is a part of it.

I do agree with some of what you said. Coaching maybe is a little of it but as Roy always said, "I can't put the ball in the basket". RJ has been terrible this year. I'd bet he got a huge NIL deal to get him to stay this year. Hubert needs to zone some because of our height. He's stubborn on this just like Roy was.
Coaching is 75% of it.

Disagree. A win last night combined with a decent stretch would have kept things interesting. They have to find 68 teams to fill out the field.

A decent stretch can still do that. The reality is the offense is horrible and HD will do nothing to change it

A freshman going on a stretch of heaters is the only reason this team doesn't have 10 losses already

You can combined with the success that he’s had.

It’s not like he has a losing record.

You said if no other reason than who he is and the kind of man he is. That's not a reason to keep a coach that isn't working out.
Really hope the people making the decisions behind the scenes aren’t thinking that way. It’s time for UNC to stop treating the head coach position like a hereditary crown and try to actually hire the most qualified candidate.

There’s also no hard and fast rule that says you can’t fire a coach because of X amount of accomplishments or because he’s a nicer person than the average coach. All of the circumstances should be taken into account. If the program is struggling and a turnaround doesn’t seem realistic, you’re allowed to pull the plug and reverse course. It’s time for UNC to get serious and be more decisive about this stuff.

Thank you. Glad to see someone else gets it.

I don't think not having a losing record cuts it at UNC as a reason to keep a coach. I do agree that his character matters and my preference would be to see him hang on and succeed. But if he misses the tournament again he's going to need to show that the future looks better and the only way to really measure that is by looking at the roster. So imo he needs to bring in some high end talent to show he can right the ship. If we miss the tournament and don't sign any recruit of note, I don't see how next year is going to go well and if you bring him back knowing it's going to be a shit show that doesn't do anybody any favors.

He should get another season if for no other reason than who is and the kind of man he is.

It’s also not a great look to fire coaches after 4 years, particularly ones with a title game and conference regular season crown in 2 of those years.

I could actually see Hubert resigning after another season sub par season.
Not when they failed to make the tournament the other two years. There are expectations for a blue blood program like UNC, and making the field of 68 is a minimum expectation. This team has talent, more talent than several of the teams to which they’ve lost. It is just a poorly constructed roster. The failure to improve over time or make adjustments in the course of games is indicative of coaching issues.

Hubert isn’t getting it done, and I don’t accept NIL issues are the heart of the problem. How is UNC unable to compete with the top programs in the nation when Iowa St, Houston, Marquette, UConn, West Virginia, St John’s and Memphis are sitting in the Top 25 (I purposely omitted SEC & B1G teams as a concession to their conference cash advantage.)

Keeping a coach who failed to make the tournament two out of four years at a program like UNC seems like digging a deeper hole.

I am miserable to agree with getting rid of Coach-but I agree with you here. We will go rent some outsider and buy players with NIL

Bigs will tell you it's just a different time and fans shouldn't have those expectations anymore, even when other programs like you mentioned haven't had trouble getting into the tournament and having success consistently.

I’m not sure what more folks like Bigs need to see. Hubert’s not a good coach, and the results are right there on the floor for everyone to see. And next year’s team is fixing to be an absolute train wreck.

I don’t recall coaches with Hubert’s resume being canned after 4 years.

Not sure it’s what UNC wants to put out there.

Wasn’t he ACC COY last year?
