Winning the game is the purpose of the pursuit.

We know this isn’t a great team so worrying too much about them not being elite is a waste of energy but winning some of these one possession games and piling up some W’s would still be satisfying to most fans.
Once again, I am talking about why HD is not yet ready to be in charge of the program. But to your comment, no one is even wondering if this team can be elite. (Which given the talent on this team, that’s another mark against the job the staff has done.)

Anything that you think matters.
No, it's what matters to you. You are the one saying that UNC has only been outperformed by UConn and KU in the past 5 or 10 years.

(Basing it off of what matters to me (wins, titles, extended play into March and April), UNC has definitively been outperformed by more than just two schools.)

Nobody knows what next year’s team will look like. This is the portal era.
Next year's team will look remarkably like this one. There is zero indication that our current coaching staff has the ability to build through the portal. They most definitely haven't demonstrated the ability to find team building cornerstones through portal transfers.

We definitely whiffed big time this year, but I think it's a little hyperbolic to say there is zero indication our staff can build through the portal. Manek was an all-time great addition and while Garcia didn't work out he's a good player. Cormac and Harrison were pretty spot on as well. There is no guarantee we can build through the portal, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion we can't.

I don't know, but maybe someone else does. How many players have HD/staff brought in through the portal/transfer since they took over?

Manek and Ingram though Manek was post grad rather than portal.

I've had this thought...I wonder if this year might be a wake-up call to those with money around the basketball program that more NIL is needed. Especially given that Hubert has expressed concerns about the amount of NIL we have, I could see there being a "movement" to ensure we have enough to compete with others and some donors stepping up in a significant way.

If so, we could do pretty well in the portal if we get a significant NIL boost.

It's been reported by IC on several occasions that HD/staff have matched offers, even exceeding some, in situations that they didn't secure the player. While NIL is always an issue, it's not the main issue, as some believe it to be.

Garcia
Manek
Nance
Ingram
Ryan
Withers
Wojik
Tyson
Claude
So, one out of every three (roughly) transfers will contribute significantly to the program. I think that is why some are concerned that the portal won't bring the success next year that UNC is expected to have.

The past does not define the future.

I think prior to whiffing this past offseason, Hubert has done a pretty good job using the portal to add guys that fill in the gaps of rosters that already have a strong nucleus in place prior.

Manek in ‘21-22, Ryan and Ingram in ‘23-24, even Nance in ‘22-23 was the right idea (I thought he was solid enough in his specific role and was down the list of the problems with that team).

What’s concerning is that we’ll likely have to replace a lot more production through the transfer portal than in previous seasons. It’s difficult to build a good team that way even for some of the best coaches in the sport.

Of course not, but it does allow for one to project, given history, considering it's a sign of scouting and/or player development. All that to say, as I said, this is a big reason why most folks are concerned about next season with this current staff.

Isn't that what Louisville did, though?
