Lololol literally the very first Google result for the query "UNC student men's support" came up with:

Carolina Male Empowerment Network (Carolina Male Empowerment Network (MEN))

R.E.A.L. Talk (Resiliency, Education, And Leadership- a group for BIPOC men) (Community-Building Programs)

The Men's Project (The Men's Project - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

The UNC Chapter of the American Association for Men in Nursing (Home | AAMN)

Real Men Are Teachers Initiative- USC Upstate (Real Men are Teachers - USC Upstate | University of South Carolina Upstate)

They aren't very good at high school compared to the girls and politically they just aren't as attractive a target for extra support as girls were 20 or 30 years ago.
The societal reward structure for boys doesn’t place much emphasis on academic success.

Teenage boys typically receive more positive reinforcement for being good at sports than academics, often even from parents and teachers. If you consider peer pressure and perceptions, being a risk taker or class clown can be more favorable than being an ISEF finalist.

Thanks. That gives it some context
Now for the HS my kids went to 20 years ago-this was not true-except for a handful of kids that were from families that did not emphasize education. Of course the town was an anomaly-small Univ town

Yes
At UNC if your UNC parents are rich or not rich-it doesn't matter. You don't buy your way into UNC. Legacy likely has a legitimate data point for an applicant to stay at UNC and be involved after graduation
One of our BOT members son is a freshman at Michigan St.
