Probably it's liberals leaving Facebook after Zuckerberg recently announced that he's moving his company Meta to the right to earn Trump's favor. Factchecks are going away, as are any restrictions on calling people "retards", "trannies", or any other slur that you can think of (except probably for Trumpers, I'm sure they'll still scream about any slurs against them). My guess is that this is what is driving most of the people leaving Facebook and possibly Instagram and Threads.

I can understand leaving a specific type if social media site for myriad reasons. I understand leaving ALL social media. But I don’t ‘get’ leaving one type and very purposefully going to another that hardly functionally parallels it.

BlueSky for X/Twitter seems logical but BlueSky for Facebook does not.

Bottom line is that as long as individuals don't do their own work on Digital Literacy they'll be just as hoodwinked no matter where they land in social media.

This is historic as well...the hoodwinking is not new (though the scale is off the charts in these times -- i.e., the democratization of propaganda has eclipsed education).

again, it is because people are fed up with zuckerberg.

many are also leaving instagram even though there is really no similar alternative at this time because instagram is owned by meta (zuckerberg).

a lot of the tiktok people are also (rightfully, imo) assigning some blame to musk/zuckerberg for the tiktok ban. musk has said publicly that he doesn't think that tiktok should be banned but there is ZERO doubt that privately FB/X have been lobbying to get a platform that is their competition banned.

I just thought people were moving to Bluesky as an alternative to Twitter. Anyone coming to Bluesky as an alternative to Facebook will be sorely disappointed. I am unaware that is a thing.

Im a historian so I have to stare right into the train wreck so I’ll keep visiting twitter from time to time. Foreign news, in my case Central American, is also very present there still so I’ll hashtag Guatemala and other specifics there as well.

There are very specific communities that are still very sticky to Twitter: Latin America politics (and all the offshoots...the Nicaraguan resistance is pretty much only on Twitter). Basketball coaching twitter is also a big thing that has really not budged. NBA twitter is slowly porting over to Bluesky.

can't speak to what new platforms people may or may not be joining or why, i just know that there's a large faction of people who are done with musk/zuckerberg and their platforms.

Seems to be a 'cut off your nose to spite your face' type of move to me. But I can't judge anyone over leaving a particular social media site or every last one of them for that matter.

My .02

why? people have decided that whatever enjoyment they get from using those platforms isn't worth enriching those guys and being part of their social media ecosystems. seems like a perfectly reasonable and enlightened decision. i'm one of them - i'm leaving instagram after having been fairly active on it since @ 2012 or so.

i haven't really heard of people removing businesses from those platforms yet, just personal use accounts. removing businesses might fit your "cutting off your nose to spite your face" interpretation.

NYTimes PitchBot on Bluesky

"Opinion | Don’t worry, fellow liberals. In 40 years when the American spring arrives and our grandkids are tearing down statues of Elon and Trump, we’ll have the last laugh."

I didn't want to go there but frankly I doubt any enrichment decline will be noticed by the person in question.

maybe it'll just basically amount to virtue signaling. that's fine, it makes me feel better about what i'm doing and not doing with my time/energy.

but maybe it can amount to more. obviously we aren't going to put musk or zuckerberg in the poor house but if enough pissed off tiktok folks and political refugees leave the meta apps, it may eventually be noticeable. if some competition springs up and people flock to those apps, it will surely be noticeable. bluesky looks like it may eventually dent sXitter, for example.

I only know a couple of folks doing it and both of them have left both FB & X with messages saying they’ll be active on Bluesky if you want to keep up with them.

Apparently, a number of facebook groups also have Bluesky group pages. I have no idea how that works, as I have used Bluesky exactly twice, but admins in several of my facebook nerd-themed groups have told us that they also run groups on Bluesky.

Have to look into that. There is a Facebook page for the Biorhythms...also a now-unused Twitter one. The ritmos can be found already on BlueSky and Threads but only as a link to Instagram.

The sXitter to Bluesky migration started a few months ago when fElon truly attached himself to Trump and people decided they no longer wanted to be part of a far right propaganda social media ecosystem. The Facebook/Instagram to Bluesky migration is more recent, originating in recent weeks when Zuck the Cuck kissed the ring in service of personal greed and it became apparent that his platforms would become MAGA sympathizing at best. And yeah, the structure of the Bluesky platform is very different from Facebook and Instagram but the social media options for those uninterested in participating in MAGA-commandered socials are very limited these days. It's essentially Bluesky or Snapchat. That's it.
