I’m just saying. Go back and watch the Cal and SMU games. Count how many lightly contested 3FGs they took. But all I heard after those games is how much better our defense is playing.Whether the 3s go in or not it's still our fault for "lightly" contesting them. I didn't see too many today I would consider heavily contested. I saw a lot where someone was there but barely did anything. Kind of like teams were on Cadeau last year. Yeah I'm standing here in front of you but I'll still let you shoot it. Or they were getting there very late so it was techincally contested but still a great look.
Y'all this BC team is terrible. 2nd worst in the ACC with only 4-15 Miami being worse. It's another extremely lackluster performance by us no matter how you slice it. And you can't blame our lack of bigs either because Jalen had his way on offense. I was like wow this team can't even contain Jalen and they still may beat us.
True, but there's a difference between getting burned by 40% shooting and 64% shooting. And if BC was shooting this well all season, they wouldn't be last place in the ACC. They didn't play like the #231 team today.Whether the 3s go in or not it's still our fault for "lightly" contesting them.
I get what you're saying and I fully agree with your last sentence. And I think that's the frustration with a lot of people right now. Absent that one incredible ten game stretch we don't get better. We are what we are beginning to end every year. And this year our playing to the level of our competition is as bad as I think I've ever seen.I’m just saying. Go back and watch the Cal and SMU games. Count how many lightly contested 3FGs they took. But all I heard after those games is how much better our defense is playing.
Even if BC were shooting against air, they shouldn’t have hit that high a percentage. If they shot like this the rest of the season, they wouldn’t be the worst offense in the ACC. Sometimes weird stuff happens in one game samples.
The much bigger problem is that we aren’t getting any better and February is right around the corner.
True, but it’s pretty hard to beat even a bad team that goes 14-24 from 3. Good thing BC is a bad team.True, but there's a difference between getting burned by 40% shooting and 64% shooting. And if BC was shooting this well all season, they wouldn't be last place in the ACC. They didn't play like the #231 team today.
But it still should not have been close, given the talent disparity between the teams. Even if BC played like the #100 team, it still should have been a comfortable victory.
They shot 52.4% from 2.What did BC shoot on layups/dunks/paint touches?
They had 11 layups/dunks in the first half and shot 10 fts
Jwash didn’t alter a shot all night. First block from a big came with 42 seconds left in OT
Note how I didn't only say 3 pointers. But, if I did, it's still an accurate comment. Folks tend to make more good shots than bad shots. For three pointers, that's only a little bit true. Mostly three point defense is about limiting the number of three pointers taken.
Please don't make excuses about them shooting lights out. BC doesn't shoot 14/24 from 3 and score 96 points on anyone without some horrible, horrible defense paving the way. Don't they average losing by 17.5 in the ACC? Just like ND we absolutely pulled this game out of our ass at the very last second to avoid an extremely embarrasing loss.
I would also like to know why Ian Jackson was sitting on the bench when we were down 2 with under a minute to go and had 3 time outs.
Don’t you wonder why we even bother to follow or root for the team?We are a pretty danged shitty basketball team by the standards of anyone who is being honest. UNC should never find itself in this place in basketball. It just shouldn't. There are too many resources, too much history, too many advantages. I make excuses for a lot of things about Carolina athletics, but I'll never make excuses for our men's basketball program. Any coach leading our hoops program is born on 3rd every college basketball season. I don't give them credit for hitting a triple. This is the team and program that Coach Davis has built. It is coached the way he wants it coached by people hand-picked by him to implement his style of play.
I don't see anything about this season or last that tells me we are headed in a reasonable direction as a program.
They shot 52.4% from 2.
1. We are not good. I'm not going to weigh in on the coach. I don't feel qualified to do so. I would point out that RJ is statistically Caleb Love this year. Why he regressed so much? I don't know, but it's hard to be good when your best player is shooting 30% from 3 point range for whatever reason. We are a pretty danged shitty basketball team by the standards of anyone who is being honest. I haven't heard Dewey yet, but I will go listen. BC made 10 of 19 3s at Notre Dame and lost by 18, so the 50%+ 3FG% doesn't tell the whole story. Carolina just lost shooters and didn't defend like it mattered. BC exceeded their season averages for 2FG%, 3FG%, 3FGA/FGA, and didn't turn the ball over. The only defensive area that Carolina played well was DR, and that started horribly with the miniature 4G starting lineup. Lubin's foul trouble didn't help, but the defensive effort and focus was very poor. Somebody in that locker room needs to step up and demand better. The defense was bad, but I think your post (and Dewey’s postgame comments on IC) on the defense are biased by the absurd 3 point percentage BC shot. If they shoot their usual percentage, we win the game by 20.
When we held SMU and Cal to absurdly low 3 point percentages, our defense wasn’t that much better. The shots just didn’t fall.
People sometimes ignore how much role shot luck has in overall defense.
Carolina was +13 in the 27 minutes Powell was on the floor and -7 in the 18 minutes he was on the bench. That was one of the most impactful 5 point/3 rebound games you'll ever see. Jackson scored 19 points, but Carolina was -2 with Jackson on the court and +8 with Jackson on the bench. How many points a team allows is equally important to how many they score. Teams win basketball games not by scoring a lot of points, but by scoring more points than they allow, and Carolina has to focus on ways to allow fewer PPP.PS...I just watched excerpts from the OT. Jackson doesn't start but rather Powell does (Cadeau, Davis, Trimble, Washington too) but by the 3:32 mark Jackson is in the game. At 2:14 we are up 96-94 and Powell is back in the game (as well as VAL for JW). Powell is in through to the end.
I feel like this is a key. This team really needs to create TOs and when it doesn't bad things happen. And TOs are a function of defense and intensity. I think the focus should be less on giving up 3 point shots and more on not forcing TOs.didn't turn the ball over.
