So Hegseth didn't even make it three months before becoming persona non grata in Trump's Cabinet. I wonder which Fox News host Orange Jesus will tap next for SecDef. Or maybe he'll go Newsmax or OAN this time. The possibilities for incompetent, unqualified right wing media sycophants are almost endless.

He may now end up holding the record for shortest term as Secretary of Defense (not including acting SODs, who are merely placeholders). The previous record was 114 days, held by Elliot Richardson. But Richardson didn’t get fired from that position; he just got moved to Attorney General, a position he resigned from just a few months later when Nixon asked him to interfere with the Watergate investigation.

I don't know. The thing is, Congress knows this stuff. They gave Trump one chance and it was a royal fuckup. I would think they would be telling Trump to give them a by-the-book standard-fare candidate or they won't confirm. Sort of the way Bush floated Harriet Miers and the conservative legal community was like fuck no so he came back with the cookie-cutterest choice of them all. While I scoffed at the Miers selection and still do, we'd be better off as a nation if she had been confirmed.

Trump's losing popularity fast enough that senators will be able to cross him. Some of them might go out of their way to pick said fight (if gentle) to signal independence from Trump -- I'm thinking of Tillis and Collins. I doubt they are going to embarrass themselves again. Obviously I could be wrong.

The Guardian has independently confirmed the existence of Hegseth’s own private group chat.

According to unnamed sources familiar with the chat who spoke to the Times, Hegseth sent the private group of his personal associates some of the same information, including the flight schedules for the F/A-18 Hornets that would strike Houthi rebel targets in Yemen, that he also shared with another Signal group of top officials that was created by Mike Waltz, the national security adviser.

The existence of the Signal group chat created by Waltz, in which detailed attack plans were divulged by Hegseth to other Trump administration officials on the private messaging app, were made public by the Atlantic magazine’s Jeffrey Goldberg, who had been accidentally added to the group.

The existence of a second Signal chat, coupled with Ullyot’s devastating portrait of the Pentagon under Hegseth, is likely to increase pressure on the White House to take action.
