I already alluded to that. Next question: why would Waltz be adding the US Trade Representative? Why does the US Trade office need to know about the strikes? Is the US Trade office designed for OPSEC, filled with people who are trained in those procedures? It is not.

No actual breach of security occurred? WTF, man. When a journalist has the flight plans for an aerial attack in advance, that is literally a breach of security. The reason we are talking about this is because there was a breach of security and information meant to remain private was made public.

This is like when bumpkin lawyers talk about "potential conflicts of interest." "Sure, I'm representing both sides of the transaction, but that's just a potential conflict of interest." No, it's an actual conflict of interest. What's uncertain is whether the actual conflict will create real harm (it probably would) -- but the conflict is indisputable. One would have thought the LSAT would have weeded this bullshit out, but alas.

Anyway, it was by definition a breach of security and anyone who says different should have their lobotomies reversed.

Also, Trump is not being any more effective against the Houthis than Biden. He's just crowing more, but the actual results are . . . meh. You see, it's hard to defeat a foe with bombs when the foe has massive headquarters and weapons plants deep underground. That's my understanding of the Houthi situation. The Saudis have been trying to defeat the Houthis with air power -- the same planes and munitions as we have! -- and have failed.

1. SIGNAL is only approved for unclassified conversations. Those texts were clearly classified information about an upcoming military operation. It is also only approved if used in a manner that complies with record retention laws. Setting the conversation to disappear in a few weeks violates those laws. Ratcliffe was full of shit in his testimony.

2. It wasn’t just a mistake. It was a colossal fuckup demonstrative of the amateur hour the Trump administration is.

3. No breach of security? A freaking journalist knew the exact times planes would be launching and the exact time the first bombs would be striking. That is 100% a breach of security. Hegseth declaring the op clean on OPSEC with all of this going on adds to the amateur hour hilarity. Additionally, we know at least one of the conversation participants was physically in Russia at the time of the conversation and that the NSA had warned less than a month ago about Signal being hacked by the Russians.

4. Sure, bombing a fairly unsophisticated group of militants is pretty hard to fuckup. Even for these clowns, because the actual war fighters are professionals and know what they’re doing.

5. we have been bombing the Houthis for over a year, so don’t act like Trump is doing something Biden wouldn’t.

Everything affects commerce. If that was the standard, the trade rep would be the president.

In reality, of course, most people can understand that the USTR has specific duties that relate to international trade in a certain way, without being co-extensive with the whole concept of commerce.

In the old days -- you know, back when it was expected for people given top secret clearances to pass a security check -- the reason not to include USTR would be obvious based simply on the fact that the USTR people aren't going to have the highest clearances. They don't need them, because their work doesn't involve them, and obtaining the highest security clearances would be a waste of time and potentially deprive USTR of talent in a field that's not exactly brimming with brilliant people (and to know why, you only need watch Quiz Show).
