That's how it always is with GQP disinformation, though. The whole point of the misinformation campaigns by the Russians and others is that if you flood the zone with this crap it will capture a lot of gullible, mostly well-meaning people who don't recognize it as BS.
this.

a few of the people i've seen reposting this shit on instagram aren't super politically engaged nor do they normally post a bunch of right wing nonsense.

the propaganda seems to be getting to some people who are relative normies, unfortunately.

I literally drove my car full of food and diapers and bottled water and other necessities into Asheville today.

Dropped them all off with my neighbor who is running an aid station near the RAD.

GTFOH with that bullshit

The area in question isn't Asheville. Banner Elk area is what I am hearing about. I just got off the phone with someone who was being prevented from getting in with supplies. I was told they bypassed the area being blocked with UTVs with supplies and went around to the Newland area and came in from that sideand delivered items to families that have been without for a a few days now. I'm simply sharing the information I am getting from people I know that have loaded up and headed that way to both help and try and find missing family. Several missing family members were found without power and in decent shape considering but had no supplies left. That is what I do not understand, why they aren't letting these people with the ability to provide non-perishables and other needed items in to specific areas. They were able to get some of these folks out that wanted to get out and they are bringing them back this way soon once the remainder of the supplies are distributed.

Are you really that stupid? I'm serious.

I mean, if that’s all from the horse’s mouth and it’s a first hand experience then it sounds very frustrating and I can understand why they would be upset. I will say that my brother drove up a few days ago from Raleigh to Linville via 181/Morganton with a car full of supplies and had zero issues. Newland is right down the road.

Rumor: FEMA is confiscating donations for survivors.

Fact:

Rumors about FEMA turning away donations, stopping trucks or vehicles with donations, confiscating and seizing supplies often spread after a disaster. These are all false.

FEMA does not take donations and/or food from survivors or voluntary organizations. Donations of food, water, or other goods are handled by voluntary agencies who specialize in storing, sorting, cleaning, and distributing donated items.

FEMA does not conduct vehicle stops or handle road closures with armed guards -- those are done by local law enforcement.

Yeah, they said they were able to get in around Newland, but not near Banner Elk and had to go in that side and basically off road to the area they were trying to get to. They do seem frustrated, I have spoken with two different people that do not know each other and both have given me similar information on the telephone. One is a lifelong friend, another is a co-worker that took personal days to go up and try and locate some extended family that was missing. said they did find everyone, but they were low on supplies and out of power and had dead cell phones. They are going to come back to our area for a while. Both guys are giving me similar information when I have spoken with them. If I can find anything that can be linked to corroborate, I'll certainly do it.

EDITED TO ADD : Thanks for the link about FEMA, not sure who is doing the blocking then, perhaps they assumed it was FEMA based on rumors they had heard. But some entity is trying to prevent people from coming in certain areas for some reason. I was never told anyone was taking supplies, but trying to block entry.

On another note, where is our state legislature while all this is going on?? They have 2 billion + in the "Rainy Day fund" that they have contributed to for years instead of giving teachers and state employees raises. Is there a bigger need than right now in their own state to release some of these?? Get your butts back to Raleigh and help some people.

Agree 100%. I would think this is the definition of a rainy day. Don't have to use it all, but should get some of that moving.

I’m guessing it’s for safety reasons — bad roads that could continue to crumble. There’s also the threat of additional landslides.

If your friends are able to get to their family members, wondering why the family members didn’t try to go find local resources themselves? Not victim blaming, just wondering if their vehicles were damaged or run out of gas or something? There are lots of local churches with lots of supplies. Do these folks have a method of communication? There are a TON of ppl on this Avery Co facebook group that would be willing to help.

Thanks, I'll share this link with them. Perhaps they can pass it on to the people up there.

Some important context with this. When you get 20" at the beach, the water can spread out easier...it's nice and flat. When you get that kind of rain in the mountains, it is funneled into the lower valleys and can't spread out the way it can along the coast. So, that's why we saw way more devastation with the rain in the mountains compared to the coast.

If you really are interested in educating yourself about what is happening on the ground in Banner Elk you should watch this interview of the person in the city managing the relief effort. She discusses all the supplies they are providing people not just in Banner Elk but the surrounding communities. She discusses conveys of aid being delivered. She also expresses the one thing that is hindering relief efforts is people coming to the area thinking they are helping. She gives a website with drop off locations for Banner Elk if people want to donate supplies.

Just pulling up google maps shows that most roads into and out of Banner Elk are closed and there are multiple articles discussing how roads are washed out and unusable. Google maps traffic shows the one way in and out of Banner Elk, 194 to the west, is all jammed up with traffic. The premise of your criticism is factually incorrect and the implication that the government is somehow blocking people from getting aid is dangerous.
