Just heard from my in-laws who live in Weaverville (just north of Asheville) after not being able to contact them for over 48 hours. They are ok, but the situation generally is pretty bad over there.

Municipal water plant folks are crushing it and way ahead of schedule. That would appear to be step one to recovery. Line workers have a seemingly impossible amount of work ahead of them.

My MAGA neighbor was complaining today that Cooper hasn’t called out the National Guard already. “You can bet if this were Florida DeSantis would have called them up!”

Lineman crews (and equipment) will move into FL, GA, SC, NC, and TN from other states (let’s hope for no more substantial storms this hurricane season).

The Northeast states and Midwest states will likely reduce/halt most maintenance and new construction work and send available linemen (and equipment) to the impacted states.

The linemen love this work - according to a cousin who works for Duke Energy (formerly FP&L) in the Tampa area, he gets ridiculous overtime for this type of work……..including time sleeping (IIRC) while in another state doing emergency work.

I’lm certain the relevant National Guard units are already making plans. No need to call up the National Guard until local, state, and federal entities are prepared to use the National Guard effectively.

Edited to add: I’m talking about the construction and heavy equipment units, not the 1st responder type units.

Correct. FEMA is the coordinating agency for disaster response. Especially initially their work is more opening financial spigots than anything else. First response is primarily state and local, but FEMA coordinates surge state and local assets from outside the disaster zone to assist. Then when it switches from search and rescue to recovery FEMA coordinates longer term solutions like housing for displaced persons and the like.
 
My cousin is working for the swift water rescue team. I can't imagine the hours he is pulling.
