Holding Trump accountable for his promises

Social media has been flooded today with stories of Trump voters who are shocked to learn that tariffs will raise consumer prices as reporters are covering that information. Daniel Laguna of LevelUp warned that Trump’s proposed 60% tariff on Chinese imports could raise the costs of gaming consoles by 40%, so that a PS5 Pro gaming system would cost up to $1,000. One of the old justifications for tariffs was that they would bring factories home, but when the $3 billion shoe company Steve Madden announced yesterday it would reduce its imports from China by half to avoid Trump-promised tariffs, it said it will shift production not to the U.S., but to Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico, and Brazil.

There are also stories that voters who chose Trump to lower household expenses are unhappy to discover that their undocumented relatives are in danger of deportation. When CNN’s Dana Bash asked Indiana Republican senator-elect Jim Banks if undocumented immigrants who had been here for a long time and integrated into the community would be deported, Banks answered that deportation should include “every illegal in this country that we can find.” Yesterday a Trump-appointed federal judge struck down a policy established by the Biden administration that was designed to create an easier path to citizenship for about half a million undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens.

Meanwhile, Trump’s advisors told Jim VandeHei and MIke Allen of Axios that Trump wasted valuable time at the beginning of his first term and that they will not make that mistake again. They plan to hit the ground running with tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, deregulation, and increased gas and oil production. Trump is looking to fill the top ranks of the government with “billionaires, former CEOs, tech leaders and loyalists.”

...

It then goes on to look at pre/post Civil War South. Encourage everyone to read the whole thing.

Right. I knew there was a big one I forgot. Will update my post.
but Trump said 100M came across the border under Biden
I am going to do my part to try to hold Trump accountable for his many promises.

1. Across the board tariffs.
2. Repeal ACA
3. Round up and deport all illegals.

I am sure there are many more. Won't hold Trump accountable for #3 because while it will harm us all, the majority of the harm is to people who are innocent.

We fucked around long enough. Time to find out. Trump promised these things so it is time conservatives (many of whom believe Trump never lies) hold him accountable.

Ready for my ex-con cousin to lose his healthcare and disability. FAFO

Ready for all of the poor people in my rural hometown to lose their school and insurance. FAFO

Ready for inflation (due to 1 and 3) to destroy the same people. FAFO

I am going to keep this thread alive until Trump makes good on his promises.
Why bother, no matter what Trump does I don't believe Trump and his people have any intent to ever leave office
As he told his supporters:This will be the last election you will have to vote in

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Christians on Friday that if they vote for him this November, "in four years, you don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good, you're not gonna have to vote."

The only time a majority of americans hold their elected officials accountable is when they are noticeably hit in their pocketbooks.

Actually, he's already broken this promise. He promised to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of being elected.
Giving him the [undeserved] benefit of the doubt, he probably meant within 24 hours of taking office. Being [truthful or] clear and accurate is not his strong suit.

Good idea. Maybe Bernie should relocate.
It’s really early, but it will be a challenge for Dems to re take the Senate in 2026.
The Dems will defend 5 states that were won with less than 10% of the vote:
Colorado
Ga
Mich
Minn
New Mexico

The Republicans only have to defend 3 states that were won with less than 10% of the vote:

Maine
NC
Texas

Maine and NC appear to be the best chances at this early date.

FWIW, I was being facetious. When someone with Bernie’s ideas gets elected to the senate in a state a little more purple than Vermont, Paine will have better cause to argue Dems need to push for more social spending.

Sorry, but Trump kept more promises than he made last time. He'll do it again! MAGAA!

Just to be clear, I don’t think we should run Bernie clones in purples states or districts. It’s more so about his core message than running people who agree with everything he says.

There are Democrats in purple and red districts right now who champion increased social spending. It’s a winning message, but it’s not the only factor that determines whether a candidate wins in a red or purple area, obviously.
Fair

Are you sure it wins more than it loses? That's my issue. My inclination is toward what you are saying. My pragmatism is pushing caution. If we head that way, it's going to be hard to backtrack.

What we really need is for the public to be forced to reckon with the fact that Fox News and other right wing media has been lying to them. An election bloodbath won't help if Fox is still able to push a narrative that is unchallenged by half the country.
I am hopeful that the propaganda will have a limit. Like, when inflation is 10% AND we enter a recession, and prices are rising along with unemployment, then maybe people will wake up and realize that the GOP cares nothing for them and has been playing them like fools.

I guess I can’t be sure until we go in on the strategy. I just know that our current strategy has failed and the other options don’t gel with what I’ve seen on the ground and what I’ve seen in the data.

If your inclination is going this way, I think you should put some trust in that.
It's not the trust, although I have almost none in anything, it's that going in that direction is very committal and very vulnerable. Anything that smacks of socialism is automatically anathema to a large portion of the country. Will this win almost all the rest?

This is what young progressives refuse to hear despite its unquestionable truth.

Part of the problem is the way history is taught in college. Academic historians give far more attention to obscure socialists or social movements or temporary flowerings of leftism in certain areas than to electoral history or the history of mainstream politics. At least that was the case when I was in grad school and I've not seen too much in recent years to cause we to revisit.

In two years people will be ready to build a guardrail against Trump’s excesses, so Dems will be in a different position. Republicans running for Senate in 2026 will have to defend Trump.

Our strategy didn't fail. Inflation, which was almost entirely out of our control, did us in. It is hard to message to normal people that inflation is back down when they are still seeing high prices.

People overreact to every lost election.

The response to socialism allegations is quite easy to parry if your message is sound: All Americans having healthcare is socialism? Americans being paid a decent wage is socialism?
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. What's the thing people say on this board, sweet summer child?

You think you're the first person to think of that response? That's been the argument for a century. IT DOESN'T WORK. Americans freak out upon hearing the word socialism. Quite easy to parry? "Liberal" was hard to parry in the 1980s. Socialism? It's hilarious how you accuse me or others as being out of touch with working Americans when you are this clueless of reality.

We've already done this before. "All Americans having healthcare is socialism" was specifically the message that the insurance industry and the GOP used to defeat Hillarycare. Health insurance -- a major campaign point for Bill Clinton -- got jettisoned because Americans decided that they didn't want the socialism of managed care.

Put down the Jacobin and start reading back issues of the New York Times or any other newspaper from the 1980s and 1990s. You'll learn something.

I’m done responding to your arrogant ass posts.
I don't always love his tone but ,seriously, about the only place that word doesn't have a majority negative connotation is Vermont. He's right. Go look at how the concept is perceived. Then look at how well the media participates in fair play and nuance. I really am not against your ideas but they are a long way from a movement.
