I understand that and won't even quibble about what of the remainder was either negotiated by Duke or connected to Duke alumni. It was more curiosity about what the overall cost was. Outside him, that was an extremely talented team and not cheap.

"Not willing" is a bizarre term to use for an endeavor with a capped budget.

If we have $5M to work with, and the going rate for a good center is $2M, then it doesn't matter how much HD wants them here. We're going to get what we pay for, which is Lubin and not the guy from Stanford.

Also, it seems weird that you discount the concept of secondary options. Nobody was "forced" on HD perhaps, but if he's going with his sixth choice, it's seems weird to say he wants them here.
$5mil last year is believed to have been within the top 20 NIL budgets for CBB. It's believed that we were competitive in our NIL offers last summer. Our budget certainly outpaced our outcomes.

This year at $14mil we're believed roughly within the top 10. The program has gotten more money to work with, but the cost of playing has gone up a lot in just one year, as well.

That was for two of his deals, one with New Balance and the other Fanatics. How much did Duke pay him?
The closest I've seen to answering that question is that Flagg made $6mil last year while at dook, with the school's NIL collective responsible for roughly half of that amount.

But I can't remember the source for those numbers nor would I stand by it even if I did, given all the uncertainty around NIL numbers.

Believed. I'm not sure how much I trust info that filters through the sands of IC. Plus, if the staff knew the winning bid, they might have won. LOL. I wonder how much they had to pay to keep RJ. A lot of the budget I would imagine.

oh i was just musing, not replying directly to you @donbosco

flagg's NIL money is clearly tops we've seen yet. it sounds like dybantsa got @ 7-8m from byu but i don't think he will get near flagg in terms of other deals and endorsements.

There are no firm facts out there about NIL from any school or really any specific player. If you're not willing to go with the best reporting available, then you're simply left with your own thoughts and nothing more.

Well then, who’s reporting did you see that gave the amount Flagg was paid by Duke? And, what was the amount?
I've seen the number put at anywhere from $5M-$7M, but precision and accuracy aren't really relevant to my point. It's obvious that Flagg would be paid more than anyone else, and it's also clear that Duke's budget was much higher than ours -- again, whether or not it was $5 or $7

By contrast, the issue of whether our offer is competitive seems to demand greater precision.

As snoop pointed out, our offers were competitive last off season, sometimes even bidding higher than other teams involved (who ended up getting the player).

I asked about Flagg because I'm curious and you seemed to imply you knew the amount he was paid by Duke.

Seems like the only competitive offer is the highest offer.
