I give everyone somewhat of a pass on Evans as he was no one's first, second, or third choice for our PG.

He was a "it's 2am and the bar is closing" choice and HD/Tanner did what they had to do to go home with someone.

Yeah, Evans didn't work out and even did worse than I think was reasonably projected, but I think you can have a few beers and squint and see why they chose him at that point. And then they overpaid to make sure they got him as opposed to no one.
I totally get what you're saying. I think though, if that was the case, that they were just trying to take a flyer, then Ben wouldn't have worded it that way. But, I'm totally just assuming here.

Assuming this isn't Mushmouth Goodman making this up, what an incredibly cunty thing for another ACC coach to say. Sure, the sentiment is accurate that if you're competing against UNC you'd probably rather it be against Hubert Davis than say, Dusty May, but still a really shitty thing to say about a former coaching fraternity colleague.

Also, unless that coach quoted is Jon Scheyer- which it isn't- then that coach can STFU because he didn't have a Final Four, an ACC title, and a 1 seed at any point in the last 5 years like Hubert Davis did.

I agree with you 💯 @CFordUNC, this is shit. And anyone saying this should put their name on it or keep it to themselves. Aside from Jon Scheyer, I could make a compelling case that Hubert Davis was the second best coach in the conference the last five years.

ACC Coaches ain't what they used to be. Pat fucking Kennedy would coach circles around some of the chodes we have walking the sidelines right now.

I may have missed it in here somewhere. Is the expectation that Tanner will be released as well? I guess that may be based on who ends up being hired as head coach, but has there been any talk or speculation?

I think you're right, that it will depend on the coach hired. However, Greg did mention Tanner's buyout in his article a few days ago.

I bet at least half of the current coaches in the ACC could have done better than Hubert if they had UNC resources and brand behind them. Shoot, Jeff Capel likely would have out coached him if he were at UNC. And I know Jai Lucas, Brad Brownell and Ryan Odom would have.

Given that Hubert had spent years in the media, one of the most disappointing parts of his tenure was that he was not better at the press part of the job, from start to finish. He was just never really comfortable in that setting.
Agreed. This was surprising to me and was something I thought he’d excel at. The ESPN version of Hubert rarely showed up in press conferences or interviews. Clearly by the posts and interview sentiments from (most) players over the years, that Hubert was still intact. But with the media he was very guarded and territorial.

Which I understand why coaches can get that way, but I just expected that TV experience and genial reputation to translate better in that environment.

Michelle Obama Dnc GIF by Democratic National Convention

(it isn't piling on to point out that going dark for any amount of time after the VCU loss was not good. that is just self evident)
I think it is because there's a ton of speculation that goes into interpreting what that means. It's a default to painting Hubert in a bad light, something they've been doing for quite awhile now.

I’m not convinced that Scheyer or HD were the best coaches over the last 5 years. Dook & UNC may be the best 2 programs, but that doesn’t mean those 2 were the best 2 coaches.

So I know Hubert is gone - what about the rest of his staff?
My guess is that will largely be up to the new coach. I would expect that if we hire a current college HC he would be likely to bring most, if not all, of his staff with him. I'd like to see at least one of the current assistants retained, but no idea how likely that is.

Well I was wrong...I thought Hubert would fall on his sword.
I don't blame Hubert for saying he didn't want to resign. If that's the truth (and evidently it is), he apparently didn't want to play some bullshit game that everybody knew was bullshit, i.e., resign instead of being fired b/c somehow that would be the most "honorable" or "respectful" (or whatever) way to handle it. I guess he just didn't feel that lying about it was honorable or respectful or whatever. It doesn't seem like he has any particularly hard feelings over it, he didn't go on and on about it, just said "My desire was to continue coaching here," and then he said some nice things about the opportunity to coach at UNC and the relationships and experiences with the players and staff. Pretty honorable and respectful if you ask me. And honest...

what all does the bolded entail to you? aside from the simple facts that HD was coached by DES and worked under Roy, how was he doing those things?

it just feels really arrogant to me to claim that no one else could possibly come in and respect and honor the program's legacy and tradition and instill the same sorts of values that dean and roy did.
As competitive as these guys are, let’s see who wants to come in and pay sincere deference to Dean’s legacy and care about smoothing that over vs. who comes in and says F that, it’s cute and nice and all, but this is my program now.

Look at how Doherty upset the status quo in that regard, and he was even part of that legacy. Now we’re throwing it to the wolves. IMO anyone who thinks otherwise has their head in the clouds, in rationalization for getting the move they wanted made. Can’t have your cake and eat it too though.

But if that dynamic never rears it’s head, I’ll be pleasantly surprised and happy to say I was wrong.

i get the 2nd part, there's some baggage with some of our fan factions in here but even if you want to interpret HD's radio silence post VCU in the most positive possible way, it still wasn't a good look.

I don't think it was a big deal. It was basically half a day. It's being blown up to disparage a guy who's already at rock bottom.

but what exactly does the bolded entail?

and to me, doherty is the perfect example of why not being in the family isn't a deal breaker - he very much a part of the family/legacy/tradition and he was a colossal asshole who failed mightily at the job.
