“… UNC did not return from Greenville, S.C., the site of its NCAA Tournament loss, until Friday. One of the sources said there was a call the same day with major program stakeholders to discuss North Carolina’s financial situation, and whether the school will be able to raise the requisite funds not just for next season’s roster, but to buy out potential candidates.…”

“… UNC’s two-man recruiting class features five-star guard Dylan Mingo (No. 8 overall, per 247Sports) — who, importantly, is committed to the Tar Heels but not signed — and four-star wing Maximo Adams (No. 25).

Another key piece of UNC’s thinking, sources said, is making the most of Cunningham’s experience before the longtime Tar Heels AD steps into an advisory role in July. Incoming athletic director Steve Newmark, a former NASCAR executive, has never hired a college coach in any sport before, and the scale and stakes of replacing Davis would be massive. The UNC job is considered one of the best in the sport, if not the best.“

My top two choices to replace CHD and for our incoming AD to consider :

Kyle Larson and Chase Elliot

A recruit being signed or not is basically irrelevant today. Nobody holds recruits to signed letters of intent. There’s zero chance we’d hold Mingo to it if we fired Davis and he wanted to move on but he had signed.

So the Athletic director is learning on the job also?

Unless a new coach does something that specifically alienates him, I think he attends games.
Yep. Roy loves going to sporting events. He goes out and supports all the UNC teams. I see him front and center at Hornets games. His grandson and my niece have attended the same schools and are in the same class, and they were both on their middle school track team. Roy would come to their track meets. I know it’s his grandson, but driving 2.5 hours to watch a middle school track meet suggests you justice love watching live sports.

I'm sure he wouldn't do it to the school but I might bust a gut laughing if they came back and grudgingly offered him another year because they're having trouble making things work and he told them, "Screw you, I'm out of here."

I suspect sportscasting is easier money and you sleep better at night.

The lack of clarity amid the chaos of this speculation means to me that the decision has 100% been made that HD will not return. I think the much larger issue is the direction after that.
I hope you're right. I don't know if I can sit through another year of this.

Nobody can...and that's kind of my point. At this, anyone who thinks HD should be retained will likely never change their mind. Anyone who thinks he should go will likely never change their mind. There are more people in the "go" group in our fanbase than there are the "stay" group. UNC cannot retain a coach who is perpetually having a one game referendum on his career.
