I’m sure someone has brought this up but if Wilson doesn’t get injured you’re likely a 3 seed.
It’s not like the team totally bottomed out the rest of the regular season without Wilson though. His injury probably cost us a 5 seed, maybe a 4 seed. Anything higher than that would have required a win @ Dook and/or winning the ACCT.

It’s possible those things would have happened, but not particularly likely imo.

The lack of clarity amid the chaos of this speculation means to me that the decision has 100% been made that HD will not return. I think the much larger issue is the direction after that.
Zero chance he’s back. IC’s reporters wouldn’t be framing the discussion the way that they are if that were still somehow on the table. Once the national media starts jumping on the story like they have in the last day, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Appears firmly in doubt.
It’s not a foregone conclusion but it’s a sure thing. But we can’t know for sure.
the NYT article is generally consistent with what I was hearing yesterday, that things had been in a fact-finding mode — who would be legit interested in the job, how much is their buyout and what is their minimum NIL demand, and figure out if the funding can be scrounged up to make it happen.

I don’t think anyone thinks we should undertake the expense and turmoil of forcing out Hubert to take a flyer on a mid-major guy or an NBA assistant coach (no matter his references).

I also heard Nate Oats has negatives other than large buyout — apparently he has a reputation as being prickly even with big donors, which would be a bad thing for a program trying to fundraiser to replace (or renovate) the basketball facilities.

dook was banged on on the ACCT so beating them with Caleb wasn't out of the question.

I'm sure he wouldn't do it to the school but I might bust a gut laughing if they came back and grudgingly offered him another year because they're having trouble making things work and he told them, "Screw you, I'm out of here."

I suspect sportscasting is easier money and you sleep better at night.
We'd save $5mil on the transition and get to move on?

Sign me up right now.

We could have beaten any team in the country with CW on a given day. I’m much less certain of our ability to beat 3 good team in 3 consecutive days, even when healthy, which I think we would have also needed to do in order to get higher than a 4.

We'll never know if the team had turned a corner or was still hit and miss.

I wasn’t picking on your or doubting we are getting a new coach, I just thought the wording of the tweeet was funny.

I do feel really bad for Hubert. After beating dook it looked like the team was primed to make a run. But then the Miami game happened and neither Caleb or Henri was right from the start. That was very weird to me and then it was pretty much downhill from there with a couple of glimmers of hope.

Sadly I think Hubert will always wonder what could have been.

Well at least Hubert can comfort himself knowing he wasn't hanged in effigy....

This is completely unrealistic but can you imagine if Caleb Wilson told UNC that he would come back next year but only if they kept Hubert? Man that would be a conundrum.

The problem is the inconsistency with Hubert teams. It wasn’t just this season. There were signs from the first season, but they were never corrected. I also feel terrible for him because he seems genuine and he truly loves Carolina. It wouldn’t surprise me that he retires after this instead of resigning and looking for another coaching job.

I really hope it’s not Oats.
Agreed. I wouldn’t see Oates as an upgrade over Hubert. I don’t like his style of play, he’s a horses ass, and doesn’t have a notably better resume than Hubert. Ideally we get one of the new breed of coaches that realized going with a 2 big stuff it in the paint system is a lot more reliable than having tall players bomb away at 30% from 3s.
