I am struggling to see how we pay HDs buyout, pay $8-$10MM per year for a new elite coach, fund NIL pay BBs ridiculous salary and pay for a new arena. The answer may be “donors” but money is fungible and resources will eventually become tapped. My guess is we will leverage our current situation against future SEC/B10 payouts but don’t love digging ourselves into a hole. Especially considering the likelihood of investment losses in 2026.

I do agree it’s time to move on from HD, but we have some massive financial headwinds here.

Booster Monopoly money.

But yeah. It feels like a pretty uncertain path we could be headed down.

MossHeel said there would be news today. I’m hoping that’s right. And think that would be plenty quick enough.
He also said there is mutual interest between UNC and Brad Stevens, but he is questioning if we are willing/able to pay.

The answer is always booster money. It seems like the big hitters are lined up behind moving on from HD rather than continuing to fund HD. Either option requires booster money.

You're correct that there is an end to booster money, but I would guess part of the discussion we're having to have (or have had) is that Roy & HD allowed us to run the basketball program on the cheap and that those days are pretty much over.

Stevens turned down $70MM, 7 years from Indiana, right? I struggle to see us paying $12MM+/year which is likely what it would take. And even then I’m not sure he’d come.

Yeah, we would need someone like Jordan to help with that. Too bad Mark Cuban didn't go to Carolina, since he seems willing to pay up for Indiana lol

With athletic dept being strapped for cash, it may be cheaper to keep her - as they say in divorce court.
Hubert 6.0 anybody?
No major University is strapped for cash. They do all they can to poor mouth so those alumni donations will flow in. It's the perfect con job. Can't believe Trump hasn't started a University yet. Oh, wait.....

The only negative about Brad Stevens is he hasn't coached in years. But being a former college coach, former NBA coach, and now a NBA executive are a lot of positives for today's NIL world of college basketball.

Don’t let your meatloaf. I was just commenting on others who said the athletic department is strapped for cash… That’s not necessarily my take just responding to that chatter.

I guess. I don’t think it’s necessary to have the new coach lined up before this gets done.
I 100% doubt we'll have the new coach lined up when we announce HD's future.

My hunch is that we're working out all the details of his resignation and trying to do so in a way that allows him and the Carolina Family a chance to have a little space throughout the process.

While there is a need to not let this hang on indefinitely, there's no reason to rush the process just to get this part done a day or two earlier if that means more hurt feelings or upset folks.

No
But you better have 2-3 interested
There's definitely interest. First time this position has been really open in like 70 years. The good thing is that the portal opens later this year (after the championship game), so we can afford to wait a week (max 2 weeks) to get a coach. Backchanneling is already happening.
