IC going to On3

I guess this is what I just don't get about IC. Following recruiting is like watching wrestling, I just don't understand the appeal. I pull for whoever the Heels put out on the field or the court when the season starts, but I've never understood the appeal of grown ass adults following the whims of teenagers who have been drinking their own bathwater about how important they are. The whole "insider information" thing has always struck me as a scam of Trumpian proportions. And as you mention, it only takes one paying customer to share the secret and blow the whole scheme up.
When I was growing up, then attending UNC (+ a few years post grad) I was all over recruiting. Now that I’m older it’s already getting a little weirder to care so much about the athletic performance of 18-22 year olds while they’re at UNC, but keeping track of which high schoolers are visiting which teams and where the commitment is trending is where I draw the line lol. I’ll get invested in what kind of player they are once they’re actually on the team.

It’s an odd dynamic where recruiting is arguably the most important part of college sports, but following the details of it gets cringey pretty quickly.

Ben posted a thread about looking through old threads to reminisce and someone asked if they would be saved/transferred to On3:

This is just an educated guess but 247 isn’t going to save IC threads on their forum (partially because it doesn’t make a ton of sense and also they are likely mad at IC for leaving) so that’s out. On3 it’s likely going to find it exceptionally difficult to transfer the threads and place them on their platform. Exceptionally difficult.

So, if I had to bet, all the threads for the last 20 years are about to go bye-bye. Seems like a shame.

I can not get to the Athletic dammit

I got an email from ON3-with a link to the Athletic and it is circular hot dog stuff
Of course I am "challenged " on the interweb

a big personal task for me in the next 24 hours is to preserve the covid thread. i did a thread half its size and ended up with 2.9 gb of files. It also took forever.

Good on you for doing it.

That’s exactly why I don’t believe that Shannon Terry will allocate the resources to attempt to move ICs content to his platform.

There is a secondary issue of ownership, but I feel a personal archive for history purposes is worth the time investment on my part. This is primary source historic record for human knowledge that someone should save. I don't know what I will do with it, but I'd like to have the option TO do something.

Kind of surprised that IC wouldn’t have had clear language saying they own everything posted on IC over the years.

even if they own the content, if I preserve the look of the site alonf with it, is that a different copyright? That's where a lawyer would have to weigh in.

I just wish they'd save the ZZL (& ZZLP) and let it port over to the THI reign. Yeah, there'd be some weirdness, but it'd preserve a good bit of history and, if the ZZL continued, they may keep some folks around to participate there that would otherwise move on (which could lead to future memberships of some kind).

The boards will be fine. People always bitch about technical changes until they get used to them. Maybe a small handful of people will switch to Tarheel Illustrated simply because they are more comfortable with the 247 tech (which is pretty lame anyway). I'd suspect 99% will stick with IC.
The tech at On3 is even worse than 247, though.

I used to love following recruiting & getting to know the players we might be able to sign.

Now with the portal it's just ridiculous. Hardly seems like any point to it, especially since whoever we bring in will probably be gone the year after that anyway.

There are 1100+ pages to that thread. I will give it a try
I get you. And I’m not sure about the timing of it. You would be cutting things close, but it’s really the best way to archive something for historical, rather than personal, purposes. A lot of it really depends on how long it is until the website goes dead for good. That may be something that you can discuss with Ben. You have done a lot for IC over the years. It may be time to request a boon.

Barely worth knowing the players on the roster from season to season. i hate it.

wish there was a way to automate it. Right now I can put page=2, then go back and change it to 3 and so on but it takes a while...

I've paid my dollar and I've submitted a support request to get my username changed to SnoopRob. Let's see what happens next.

I think the firefox extension is working. it's at least faster than using the wbe interface. i can't pull up the supposedly archived page, but I figure there is some db lag on viewing archives
