When I was growing up, then attending UNC (+ a few years post grad) I was all over recruiting. Now that I’m older it’s already getting a little weirder to care so much about the athletic performance of 18-22 year olds while they’re at UNC, but keeping track of which high schoolers are visiting which teams and where the commitment is trending is where I draw the line lol. I’ll get invested in what kind of player they are once they’re actually on the team.I guess this is what I just don't get about IC. Following recruiting is like watching wrestling, I just don't understand the appeal. I pull for whoever the Heels put out on the field or the court when the season starts, but I've never understood the appeal of grown ass adults following the whims of teenagers who have been drinking their own bathwater about how important they are. The whole "insider information" thing has always struck me as a scam of Trumpian proportions. And as you mention, it only takes one paying customer to share the secret and blow the whole scheme up.
It’s an odd dynamic where recruiting is arguably the most important part of college sports, but following the details of it gets cringey pretty quickly.
