Agreed, the Democratic leadership response to all of this has been disappointing to say the least. I'm sure some will say they're playing the long game and just letting the Republicans dig their own grave, but to be honest I don't think they're capable of doing that. I think they've been mostly silent because they're as frightened and intimidated as Congressional Republicans and have no real response. A few weeks ago there was a news article about Congressional Democrats which said they had just been "overwhelmed" by Trump's EOs and publicity blitz and were still trying to work out some kind of response. How could they not have known that something like this was going to happen - it was out there for everyone to see (Project 2025, DOGE, etc.) Thank God for people like AOC and Pritzker and Chris Murphy who have been out there making some strong statements and forcefully pointing out what's going on.

Well, when you use "men playing women's sports" as a cudgel, that's pretext. It's impossible for any rational person to get so upset about something that basically never happens, and when it does, does not affect their lives at all.

Nobody will ever believe -- as long as Trump is in charge at least -- that the tariffs are over. Trump can bring them back at any time.

2. What makes you think this is true? Trump is promising to expand the tariffs. He's promising to make them universal. He's going to tariff the whole world on April 2, he says. Do you think he's lying?

3. If it was all kabuki theater, why did he do it? Don't you see that as a horrible thing to do? He's created economic anxiety for tens of millions of Americans, and for what?

4. Maybe you haven't noticed, but the economy is cratering. One reason for that is the economic uncertainty. Businesses can't operate if they have no visibility into their costs, or demand for their products. People get laid off when production shutters, and re-hiring them is not so simple.

I'm on record as saying I'm not a fan of Trump's tariff policies. They'll be a quick settlement and perhaps a factory or two will relocate to the US (like the Civic plant to Indiana) but I don't think it's worth the anxiety and pain that the tariffs cause - possibly inflation if they remain in place long enough. I would prefer Trump to cut spending and the size of government and allow the economy to continue to run on cruise control. The reduced spending would help with inflation. Tariffs complicate my preferred plan.

My hope is that Bessent will talk Trump out of further tariffs after this first wave is complete.

I'm not much on conspiracies, but I am concerned with legislation to make voting harder (save act) and I'm actually concerned with big tech and Musk finding a way to actually impact voting machines. Plus there's the gerrymandering. God were fucked.
