Is the UNC NIL collective so bad we can’t scratch on the list below? Or is this list just some fake news AI generated B.S.?

I see three on there I would want my children to attend, and then dook which also has a reputation for being solid academically. Priorities are just different.

Surprised BYU and Duke are on the list. BYU is in front of places like Alabama and UGA. Second tier surprise is VT, Louisville, West Virginia and Arizona.

NIL is the reason I’ve lost interest in Carolina sports. Kids used to come to UNC because they fell in love with its traditions, beauty, academics, mystique. Now, it’s all about the Benjamins…for a year or two, then they go elsewhere. What do I have in common with those kids? And yes I do think student athletes should be compensated, but I hate the current system of college hopping and bidding wars.

It is AI clickbait.

There is very little reliable data about where the various schools ranks. None of it is public.

Basically, we are roughly upper middle in football spending and top 5 in basketball spending.

All it takes is a few uber wealthy alumni who think this is a good use of their money, or in the case of Indiana just one.

As for MJ, I doubt a guy that won 7 championships the hard way approves of buying them. I pretty much agree with him. People can do what they want wth their own money but if I had more millions than I knew what to do with I'd be helping the poor and trying to cure cancer rather than paying college athletes.

What are the sources for that and do they cover less official money?

I hate it, too. I don't mind them getting compensated, but something needs to be done about them being able to leave every year for another school. They need to be treated as employees and have contracts like the pros. I think it would be good if the Power 4 schools just broke away from the NCAA and had basketball and football set up like the NBA and NFL, with drafts, collective bargaining agreements, contracts, and trades. Would be better than what's going on now, and at least the players would be more likely to stay at a school for 4 years if they didn't go to the NBA or NFL early.

Not to quibble - but it was 9 championships. Don't forget his two Olympic Golds.

I'm not sure about a draft but I agree that making athletes paid employees is the only path to getting some sort of organized system in place. Schools could put opt out clauses in the contract as incentives. This could help with player retention but I'm not sure how'd they regulate a salary cap.

It's pretty darn complicated but it seems highly unlikely that this genie ever gets put back in the bottle.

There’s really no official source or way to get exact numbers of how much each school is spending on NIL. The IC staff have been consistent that we are roughly in the ballpark that Calheel referenced for football and basketball. I trust their word on that more than a random unsourced post on Twitter.

So people claiming UNC basketball is in the top are just going off those things?
I have confidence UNC basketball is likely close to top 5 -certainly top ten
Just channeling the local sports boards writers

So if UNC is indeed top 5 in the Nation with basketball NIL collective, this begs the obvious question: Why did we whiff on getting a big to come last year? It couldn't have been about the money. Correct?
Note: Cue the Hubert haters to come on with their comments in 5, 4, 3...
