Alas. Article I, section 10:

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

States already make "trade deals" with countries but they are informal and not really binding.
 
Just remember, the market was wildly bloated and overinflated and overvalued, so this enormous loss of value is actually a good thing! And if it’s not a good thing, just remember that Joe Biden did it. And if Joe Biden didn’t do it, Trump only did it because it was necessary and because he plays 12-dimensional chess and he is a very stable bigly genius businessman.

I predicted a while back -- someone can probably dig up the post -- that Trump would lose his fucking mind when he learned about export tariffs.

I think that's the back story behind this tweet. Trump says, "tariffs are about imports" at which point someone tells him about export tariffs. They probably also told him that he can't do export tariffs (they are forbidden by the constitution, though I doubt that part of the explanation would be given), and anyway they would be suicidal. So when Ontario applies an export tariff, it caused his brain to explode.

Export tariffs are, of course, generally suicidal -- but they can be effective for a while where there is captive demand. Like power generation in the northeast and midwest. Or the automotive supply chains. The US has no captive demand for Canada that I know of, other than any electricity that might go the other way out West (don't know if it does, just allowing for the possibility) -- and again, we can't do export tariffs anyway.
 
Trump still doesn't understand the auto industry. After all those talks with industry executives, how does he not understand that he can't shut down Canada's auto industry permanently without also shutting down America's auto industry (at least the Big Three, leaving only the foreign models)?

I just listened to a segment on NPR that mentioned Biden's tariff on Canadian lumber products as a factor in supply chain/ expense issues in the housing shortage. As an aside, the experts didn't seem too keen on the proposed $25k in assistance for first time buyers either.

Biden should have rescinded them.

But we are in the present not the past, Biden can't rescind now.

Additionally trumps cahos and inconsistency are as much of the problem as the actual tariffs. And the amount of his tariffs, 250% is a little more than 5 or 10%.

Trump rescinded most of his tariffs in 2020, in the "phase one" deal in which China promised to buy a lot more American goods (news flash: they didn't, never intended to, and were following the EU's Trump strategy). So Biden didn't have much to rescind. Only the sector specific tariffs, IIRC.

According to a friend that is a frequent visitor of Mammoth Cave, it was/is currently a mess following the DOGE parks staff cuts right around the time of the recent floods. Said the trails all had washed out places, trees down over them.... Also said there appeared to be many stalled projects scattered throughout the park.

I had a friend try to say this the other day.
A) there is no "drug issue" with Canada. If anything, they should have issues with how many guns cross the border north.
B) Mexico and the US has been trying to deal with the drug issue at the border for 40+yrs. We are NOT going to arrest, deport, dissaude, stop, slow or in anyway significantly alter the drug trade at the border unless demand in the US goes down. No trade war is going to impact drugs coming through the border.


There is absolutely no reason to have started a trade war with our 2 closest and most important trade allies....zero...nothing. Nothing positive will come from this. Trump signed the last trade agreement with Mexico for christ's sake.
