Where is he getting this information that the movie industry in dying? Is it because he can't understand filming on locations that fit the narrative of the movie or is he just too fucking dumb to understand the plot of most movies?

The business is barely functioning in Los Angeles. Atlanta sucked up much of it, but Arizona and New Mexico have taken a big chunk of it. Texas wants in. A lot of televison production has setup around Toronto. i don't expect Trump to have nuanced view of things and probably just hears "Hollywood is dying" and applies it to teh whole industry, not just L.A.

The government decided Saturday to continue to press the United States to review its extra tariffs on Japanese automobiles during bilateral talks aimed at scrapping the Trump administration’s tariff measures.

Washington has excluded automobiles and other key items from the scope of the talks. In response, Tokyo has insisted that it will make no concessions as it presses for a complete overhaul of each of the duties imposed Saturday, including those on auto parts.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the day met at the Prime Minister’s Residence with economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa, who had just returned from the second round of ministerial talks in the United States, and instructed him on the government’s next steps based on the outcome of the talks.

“There is still a wide gulf between [Japan’s and the United States’] positions, and no common ground has emerged,” Ishiba told reporters after the meeting. “We are [pushing to negotiate] all the tariffs, including those on automobiles, steel and aluminum.” Ishiba also called the new duties on auto parts “extremely regrettable” and said Japan would “continue to demand that they be reversed.”

Akazawa likewise told the press that Tokyo “has consistently requested a total rollback of the tariff package, and [the two countries] cannot reach an agreement unless that element is included.”

Gerlach estimates the wholesale cost of apple juice concentrate has risen 33 percent this year compared to 2024—and he expects it to keep going up. The higher costs will impact more than just plain apple juice, since concentrate is a key ingredient in a wide variety of other juice mixes, like mixed berry and pear, and is also used as a sweetener in a variety of children’s products, including baby food.

… The US has plenty of domestic apple farms, but the industry focuses heavily on selling fresh fruits, which are typically more profitable. Each year, America exports around 16 million gallons of apple juice, but imports 430 million gallons, Gerlach says. For many years, China was the main place where the US sourced its apple juice, but Turkey has recently emerged as a close competitor. It represented 39 percent of US concentrated apple juice imports last year, while China accounted for 31 percent, according to Gerlach.

Data from the USDA suggest that Trump’s tariffs have sparked a more dramatic shift in the US toward buying apple juice concentrate from Turkey. So far this year, Americans have imported around 92 million liters of unfrozen apple juice concentrate from China, compared to 29 million liters from Turkey. China saw a major spike in juice buying in January as importers raced to make purchases before the tariffs went into effect; now its sales have plummeted, while Turkey’s are soaring. For the week of April 25, Turkey exported more than twice as much apple juice concentrate to the US as did mainland China. …”

At some point the more well-intentioned Republicans have to ask themselves if it is good that their leaders have to regularly deny things that are undeniably true in order to achieve their (misguided) goals.
Point is - if you have to lie about something to achieve a goal, is the goal the correct outcome to strive for?

The slide in exports is linked to the decline in containerships coming to the U.S., as businesses across the economy cancel manufacturing orders, sending Chinese factories and freight ships into retreat, as well as changes in global demand linked to U.S. trade policy. U.S. imports continue to decline, with port data tracked by Vizion showing a 43% week-over-week drop in containers from the week of April 21 to the week of April 28.

No worries, Pope Trump will absolve them of their sins, as soon as he is done denying that he posted the photo himself as pope.

Exactly. If you have to lie about what you are doing, then in most cases you are admitting that what you are doing is wrong.

He should have asked. “Someone writes the government a check for the tariffs. Who does that?”

That removes the ambiguity around the question. And to be honest, if you want the most direct answer it isn’t the consumer so by reaching for him to say the consumer, you are already asking him to answer the question with some nuance.

Just force him to say the importer.
 


The Administration needs to drop the you’ll have fewer dolls and like it approach.
