I am very clearly on team ellipse, which I read are called “boomer dots” by the youngs. Youngs obviously don’t understand how much Gen X values the snarky pregnant pause implied by skilled deployment of the ellipse. They also don’t do grammar.
I'm pretty sure it was the influence of Herb Caen that got me started with the ellipses when I first started posting in chatrooms in the late 90's. Loved that guy...

I think JK made it easy because:
1) He lied in his maga comments
2) It is one of the most sensitive times in years and there are a LOT of people being fired for CK comments. He didn't read the room.
3) his ratings weren't good so he made it easy for ABC to use that as an excuse.
4) he made it easy for fcc to use "for the public good" clause in broadcasters licensing as an excuse
ABC hasn't used ratings as an excuse at all, as far as I've seen. Nor would anyone believe them if they did, given the timing.

The FCC "public interest" requirement has nothing to do with the content of speech and does not give them to right to legally penalize broadcasters for the content of their speech.

Saw on CNN that Jimmy planned a full throated rebuttal, and no apology or back tracking during his monologue. Iger made the business decision that it wasn't worth the battle with FCC, so pretty clear line of events (and motivations).

(... in terms of ellipses... i always associated them with Larry King's usa today column... but whadda i know)

I'm not arguing with you. However, I don't remember in my lifetime seeing the right as galvanized. I think ABC, as a publicly traded company, did read the room and saw what was coming if they didn't act. As such, I think the show's performance as a money maker gave ABC the cover it needed to do what it was afraid to do. That is why I say JK made it easy. Had he not commented (and such a dumb comment as there was a ton of evidence by the time JK made his comment) he would likely still be in employed as ABC probably wanted to, but lacked the courage to end his show.

Man that paragraph isn't organized worth a shit but you get my point.

My guess is they are using it (public interest) with regard to it being inflammatory given the political climate. I'm not saying it is being interpreted correctly, but they can at least argue it. That is why I said this is the type of argument a lawyer would make.

But you agree that what the people on Fox News have been saying, and what Trump has been saying, and what scores of other people from the right have been saying on a constant basis are far, far, far, more inflammatory than anything JK said, right (not to mention they are serious and he is a comedian).

My hope is that one of the things that come from CK's death, after all the firings and suspensions from people celebrating is over and people realize that they shouldn't post hate shit on social media, is that there is actually a reduction in that type of thing and political hate speech is more closely examined and we have better discourse in the country. But trump can't shut his damn mouth for two seconds and let this play out and is making it about him rather than CK. I'm not a fan of JK. I think he isn't very smart. I'm for everyone, including trump, raising hell at ABC about JK, but I'm not ok with him using the fcc to put pressure on ABC. I think he is going to wind up in court and lose when he does it to someone that their bosses say F u to trump and take him to court. Right now the right is winning in branding the left as the party of hate. Trump is about to fuck it up by taking the attention away from that and making this about censorship over pettiness.
