ok I was talking jazz with some folks today and I posed my ideal North Carolina jazz band:
John Coltrane (sax) born in hamlet NC grew up in High Point, NC
Thelonious Monk (piano) Rocky Mount NC
Woody Shaw (trumpet ) Laurinburg NC
Percy Heath ( bass ) Wilmington NC
Max Roach ( drums ) Newland NC
Nina Simone ( singer ) Tryon NC
Can another state match that group ?
some Nina...
I would have picked Shuggie Otis as a bigger one. He wrote the songs, played all the instruments and produced most of his stuff.Think Sly Stone inspired the music of Prince much?
The same two I have.love me some Shuggie... I have two of his CDs... Inspiration Information and Shuggie Otis Plays the Blues.
Inspiration Information is a must have CD for blues fans![]()
Kay Kyser was born in Rocky Mount and died in Chapel Hill. He was a great big band leader, but I'm not sure he could handle a group of post-bop youngstersNot really a jazz great, not even a musician, and sort of music adjacent, but Rocky Mount's Kay Kyser could have been the director for that group.
Frances Ethel Gumm (no wonder she changed her name) was born June 10, 1922.
Pet Sounds influenced the production on Sgt Pepper as did Pet Sounds' bass tone and how Brian uses the bass as a more melodic mix forward instrument.Supposedly the Beach Boys were an influence on the Beatles and Pet Sounds may have inspired their Sgt. Peppers album.
