ok I was talking jazz with some folks today and I posed my ideal North Carolina jazz band:

John Coltrane (sax) born in hamlet NC grew up in High Point, NC
Thelonious Monk (piano) Rocky Mount NC
Woody Shaw (trumpet ) Laurinburg NC
Percy Heath ( bass ) Wilmington NC
Max Roach ( drums ) Newland NC
Nina Simone ( singer ) Tryon NC

Can another state match that group ?

Every time I see the Gavin Newsom addresses the nation thread, I think of this song. Yes, that is Ornette Coleman making a very rare appearance on someone else's album.

Not really a jazz great, not even a musician, and sort of music adjacent, but Rocky Mount's Kay Kyser could have been the director for that group.
