The 14th Amendment was an intentional choice to confer citizenship upon everyone who was born here, other than diplomats. If you don't like that choice, then you're free to advocate for changing the amendment. Personally, I think there are many, many changes to the constitution that are of much higher priority. If you want to focus on weird hypotheticals of pregnant women wandering the desert, go ahead. It's your right, just as it's my right to draw the conclusions that inevitably follow.

By saying "They don't know what they don't know" means they couldn't have foreseen the changes in our ability to travel via airplane, making birth tourism possible.

What I hope, a think, will eventually happen is there there will be a debate about the spirit of the 14th Amendment. It seems to me that BRC was intended for those who desired to migrate here permanently, not fly here for "vacation", waddle across the border at the 11th hour just to have a kid or were temporarily living here for work (diplomats).

That debate will surely include a reconsidering of what "under jurisdiction of" means.

My Dad and I have great conversations daily and we work on projects most days. He’s 86 - still sharp. As sharp as ever? No.

Mom. She has dementia. It’s accelerating. She’s 85. She’s still functional - just don’t ask her who she just met or what she just ate.

I'd give my first born child if the worst I had to endure was my parents supporting Bernie Sanders or any other halfway sane republican (not that many of them out there) and not this full blown in your face MAGA cult mentally they now project. My parents are also well aged but their minds are both plenty sharp enough to know exactly what they are getting with their support of Trump and are all in on the cruelty.... I rarely if ever bring up politics with them but they are quick to let me know what's going on in MAGA land after their day spent watching Fox News, so a little "I told you so" here and there is often needed to help try and balance some of the crazy.

I'm fully aware that it sounds pretty shitty for a son to look forward to saying "I told you so" to their parents, but this is where Trump, MAGA and rightwing media have taken our relationship. We are well past the point of being able to have reasonable political discussions and the only thing that brings the MAGA fever down a few degrees are results that you can point to and say "I told you so" - and then it's almost impossible to get that to resonate with their 24/7 Fox News brain rot.
 
Eliminating birthright citizenship aims to take away what is attracting immigrants to the US, but it's really not addressing. MAGA likes this because they want to punish the immigrant (and not affect the white man). Thing is the real magnet is jobs. The enforcement on the persons hiring illegals is lax as heck, but that's an inconvenient action for the MAGA crowd.

If immigrants, documented or not, aren't under the jurisdiction of the United States, how come we can charge them with Federal crimes?

In addition to the fact that the language of the 14th is not even remotely ambiguous, that’s a big reason SCOTUS settled this issue definitively 127 years ago. No idea why people like Zen are still determined to argue it.

I'll ask this again. Do you believe this debate about the "spirit" of the Amendment should happen with the entire Constitution?
