This is why I've never understood why the Pubs have been so convinced they have the high ground on this. The Dems have been clear they're willing to shut down the government to get the vitally important and extremely popular subsidies extended.

The Pubs' only message has been, "This is all the Dems' fault."

To which the Dems have been saying, "It takes two to tango, and if you would just show up and negotiate something that your people want as much as ours do, we're ready to go."

To which the Pubs have been saying, "Fuck you. We're not negotiating ANYTHING until you completely capitulate, and no promises we'll EVER negotiate anything."

For the people paying attention to all of this, it's not at all surprising the Dems seem to be winning the messaging so far. People expect their legislators to negotiate, to compromise, to show up and work. The Dems are the only ones willing to do that. And the people who are NOT paying attention are likely to blame the party they perceive to be in power, which is obviously the Pubs.

I have no idea how this all shakes out, but I have a hard time seeing how it makes sense for the Dems to capitulate now.

Dems want $ 1.5 TRILLIION (let that sink in) in additional spending for a CR extension of a couple of weeks. That's a King's ransom. Even the Dems most ardent supporters are not buying what they're trying to do.

Everett Kelley, President of the American Federation of Government Employees, demanded an end to the shutdown. "This week, Congress pushed our nation into the fourth week of a full government shutdown - an avoidable crisis that is harming families, communities, and the very institutions that hold our country together." Congress, not President Trump holds the government's purse stings. "Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight." "Today, it's time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today."

Ouch! The only people voting for clean CRs are all the Rs, an independent and two Ds.

Schumer better listen to his base and end the Schumer Shutdown.

Who exactly should be listening to their base?

And an Oct. 17-20 Economist/YouGov poll found 31 percent of adults put the blame on Democrats and 39 percent blame Republicans. That poll also found 45 percent of respondents saying that Democrats should hold out for changes in health care funding before agreeing to end the shutdown, compared with 32 percent who said they should not.

Pressure?: Random, meaningless poll vs. largest public sector union telling you to get off your ass and pass the clean CR.

in the past sheep would only change their minds about a prez if hit hard enough in the pocketbooks. hang around lets see if the red sheep just keeps doubling down on the con or if they change also. very strange times of so much hated from both sides towards the other flock

Yeah, I’m sure Dems are terrified that federal workers will suddenly start supporting the party that’s been Dogeing them to death.
Don’t kid yourself, this is real pressure on Democrats to reconsider. It won’t take much for a handful of Ds in the Senate to be convinced by constituent pressure like this Union and the pending loss of SNAP benefits to say vote for what is now less than a 30-day CR to give ordinary and poor Americans some breathing room and let people watch what the GOP does on healthcare while everyone is signing up for their 2026 healthcare at work, via ACA or with Medicare.

A couple of moderates already broke off a couple of weeks ago. The next break will probably not happen until after Trump returns from Asia but if/when it does it will be a jailbreak.

Dems always fold before Pubs do. But that’s not because the pressure is greater on them. It’s because they’re less psychopathic. If Dems hold firm on this, it will have hugely negative consequences for the Pubs. But I agree, there’s a good chance the Dems will eventually cave.

I did hear that it may be too late to reduce ACA premiums for 2026 even if a deal was made today. If that’s true, Pubs will get hammered regardless of what happens.

Beshear on Morning Joe just said the USDA has told him that the commonwealth of Kentucky cannot step in to replace SNAP funding.

What is depressing is that in the social media space I see a lot of America First adherents turning on Trump over his support for Israel, his bailout to Argentina, jobs and grocery prices, as well as discontent that his deportation machine has not been effective enough, mixed views of his own self-dealing (his Middle East business and diplomatic dealings is doing real political damage to him on the far right) and support for whoever they consider to be Deep State figures of the old right, but it’s not like they are breaking back to the center. Instead, it appears that a lot of already right of MAGA people (particularly youngish men) are breaking far, far right. Like in a range from Hitler had some good points to Hitler was right shifts.

Now social media is itself a very small echo chamber, but it has been wild to watch the more “academic” MAGA right influencers tag this far, far right as the “Woke Right” to try to fight including them in the MAGA/JD Vance/Charlie Kirk coalition because “woke” has way more negative connotation in the debate than “Nazi” or “racist”. Meanwhile, the far, far right is more openly embracing white nationalism and Nazi iconography and calling the anti-Woke Right MAGA cucks and squishes and libs in red hats for resisting the “obvious” solution as they start to view Trump as another flavor of the woke uniparty protecting and enriching boomers and the 1% class on the backs of the working class. Too often, the DHS and ICE social media accounts in particular are recycling the far, far right iconography back out as official government communications.

It is a pretty scary red shift going on, mostly in that far right influencer space, where the argument has already shifted to whether embracing Naziism is really too far? Many on the far far right see JD Vance as their champion though some openly call his wife and mixed race kids an automatic disqualification.

Anyway, the terms of this open debate about the future of the MAGA coalition is pretty shocking. The number of Woke Right who blame Israel for Kirk’s murder and even now blame his wife as a power mad shrew who laid the groundwork for Israel to assassinate her husband so she could take over TPUSA ( 🤷‍♀️ ) is growing among those who want to bring more radical leadership like Nick Fuentes to the forefront.

Define moderate. Of whom are you speaking?

Angus King and Catherine Cortez Masto — they already broke ranks and started voting for the CR.

Patty Murray has been talking to representatives of Thune behind the scenes searching for a compromise vote to move past the shutdown. People like that.

More and more evidence emerging that all the pressure is on the Dems.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia went back and forth during a private call with House Republicans on Tuesday, according to one source on the call, as tensions rise during the government shutdown.

Greene, who has been publicly critical of Johnson’s decision to keep the House out of session, took her criticism directly to the speaker and said he is not in touch with what people want, the source said.

* * *

The Louisiana Republican also told members the shutdown pain was about to rise to a level “10,” referring to the millions of Americans who could lose food assistance in the coming weeks, as well as disrupted air travel and missed paychecks for federal workers.

Rep. Kevin Kiley of California also voiced frustration with the House not being in session, the source on the call said.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw also complained about the House not being in session, the source said.

The criticism comes after weeks of inaction from the House, with lawmakers riding out the shutdown from their districts after passing an initial funding bill in late September. As consequences from the shutdown have rippled through more Americans’ lives, tensions have been rising in the House GOP conference, with some — like Greene and Kiley — demanding a clearer plan from leadership.

Most in the conference remain in lockstep behind Johnson, arguing that the House cannot return to Washington until Democrats agree to reopen the government. Yet the strain on the GOP is evident — even among leadership loyalists — as the shutdown drags on.

Greene later posted on X in response to a report on the private call, saying, “You left out that I said I have no respect for the House not being in session passing our bills and the President’s executive orders. And I demanded to know from Speaker Johnson what the Republican plan for healthcare is to build the off-ramp off Obamacare and the ACA tax credits to make health insurance affordable for Americans.

Democrats are calling for Republicans to negotiate with them an extension of expiring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, but Republican leaders have said the government must be reopened first before any negotiation.

She added, “Johnson said he’s got ideas and pages of policy ideas and committees of jurisdiction are working on it, but he refused to give one policy proposal to our GOP conference on our own conference call. Apparently I have to go into a SCIF to find out the Republican healthcare plan!!!”

MTG is slowly drifting away from core MAGA - evolving into a right wing populist, isolationist, anti-Israel zealot to the right of MAGA. She's going to be trouble as Trump heads into lame duck status.

I'm sure all the behind-the-scene conversations between the Dem lawmakers are calm, collected and unified. No question that the pressure is building on both sides as we approach Nov 1st with unpaid workers, SNAP benefits ending and ACA open enrollment. That's why we should open up the government with a clean CR and negotiate the ACA subsidies. Trump said he's willing to participate in those negotiations and Thune has promised a vote on it.
