Head Start programs flash red lights ahead of November funding cliff

More than 130 programs, serving nearly 59,000 preschoolers around the nation, will be without federal funds if the government doesn't reopen by Nov. 1

This saddens me.

In part, it’s because my Mom spent much of the ‘70’s traveling Eastern North Carolina helping create and establish Head Start programs in many of the poorest areas of our state.

For years, she did this work with two other women - a black pediatrician and a Jewish social worker. The group quickly learned that my Mom should check them into the motel and go get take-out.

One of the first ways they learned this was checking into a motel. “You’re from Chapel Hill. You have a n***** mayor.” Another lesson was walking into a restaurant and all conversations immediately ceased.

They often stayed in a motel 30-60 miles from any town they worked in on that trip. They always asked for their rooms grouped together. They parked their car AWAY from their rooms. Many times they’d drive two hours from Chapel Hill and return home rather than stay in the area overnight.

Certain whites in many of those Eastern counties strongly opposed Head Start - it was yet another government program for n*****s.

Which is insane but clearly would even be worse without the ACA. Do you want to have a discussion about replacing private health insurance or a discussion about the effects of the ACA limiting cost increases for private health insurance? They are two different discussions.
We'll be able to have this discussion as soon as two weeks from a decade ago. Cause that's when Trump is planning on releasing the details of the Republican healthcare plan.

I have a huge issue with that. It seems unethical as hell and likely comes with an assumption of preferential treatment from the admin.
Another day, another story that would be the biggest scandal in pretty much any other presidential administration. More info here -- https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/24/politics/anonymous-donor-military-pay-shutdown

Best I can figure it, DOD can't disclose the identity of the donor because doing so would clearly violate the narrow rules that allows DOD to accept certain types of gifts. But their failure to disclose the identity of the donor means it could be ANYONE. Could be a foreign national. Could be a defense contractor. Could be Fox News. Could be a Russian spy.

THIS IS WHY THINGS LIKE THIS ARE NOT DONE!!!! And yet, under this administration, things like this are done literally every day. Absolutely unbelievable that after ALL of this, Pubs still carry Trump's water.

Trump administration won’t use contingency fund to pay November food stamp benefits

“The US Department of Agriculture says it will not tap into its $6 billion contingency fund to cover food stamp benefits next month if the shutdown continues, according to an agency memo obtained by CNN. That means that roughly 42 million Americans will not receive critical food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in November, unless the agency shifts its position.

However, when asked whether he would direct USDA to fund food stamps next month, President Donald Trump told reporters late Friday, “Yeah, everybody is going to be in good shape, yep.” The president did not provide specific details.

Trump’s comments appear to conflict with the agency’s memo, which stated that “contingency funds are not legally available to cover regular benefits.”…”

“… Also, states will not be reimbursed if they use their own funds to pay for benefits, according to the memo, which was reported earlier by Axios.

… Democratic lawmakers and SNAP advocates argue that USDA should – or is even obligated to – use the contingency fund to pay November benefits, which are estimated to cost about $8 billion. And they are urging the agency to tap into other pots of money to cover the difference, as the administration has done for its priorities like paying troops.

… In its shutdown contingency plan, which has been since taken offline, the agency noted that “Congressional intent is evident that SNAP’s operations should continue” and referenced that the contingency plan can be used to fund participant benefits if a lapse occurs in the middle of the fiscal year.

… This is not the first time that food stamps have been at risk during a shutdown. During the record-long impasse that began in December 2018, the USDA initially said benefits would run dry at the end of January. But the agency then said it would use a provision allowing it to make obligated payments within 30 days of a government funding lapse to cover February payments.…”
