UNC/ACC Basketball History & UNC/Duke Rivalry

I don't know how anyone who likes the game of basketball can stand to watch whatever it is UVA is doing.

Dean Smith, head coach at North Carolina, popularized the four corners offense in the early 1960s.
...
However, by the early 1980s, fans were fed up. In the nationally televised 1982 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Virginia Cavaliers, North Carolina held the ball for roughly the last seven minutes of the second half to nurse a small lead, eventually winning, 47–45.

😝

Love Dean forever, but the four corners was indeed a basketball abomination.

But, if the opponent had actually played man-to-man, the 4C wouldn’t have been seen as a stall tactic.

UVA holds the ball regardless of the defense

This also prompted change, correct?

The other teams were pussies and didn’t want to play us man to man. Dean did what a coach does to gain the advantage within the rules.
Play us man to man and Dean almost NEVER would have used the 4 corners offense.

A team (like UVa back then) who sits back in a zone and lets the other team milk the clock down has no balls.

Much more eloquently stated

sorry evrheel , but i've watched in person Dean hold the ball not because he had the better athletes, but because he knew his team could not compete. Nothing wrong with that approach, but the carolina fan base believes Dean was the be all end all and the facts are, that he was not. If i have to i can throw out dates but fuck that. I used to tell many that my only regret in my life was i lived during Deans reign in CH, because he broke my heart multiple times. But then K came, and he and Dean were friends at the end, and K erased many of the Dean so called records and memories. I love Dean, and i love K. And the records speak for themselves.

Which games did Dean use the 4 corners because he didn’t think his team could compete?

I'll throw one out, Feb 24th 1979, Half time score Duke 7 UNC 0, in Cameron. Another interesting fact from this game. The chant "air ball" was created by the Crazies in this game as Chickie Yonker shot a "air ball" from the left corner in the 1st half. Yo Big, i can do this all night. There is not a UNC banner hanging that i have not seen play live, multiple times. It's all good. It's the rivalry. Good luck.

I disagree. Dean didn’t think his team was overmatched that night but his strategy did backfire.
