UNC Basketball Possible coaches

The one guy on the list that I absolutely do not want is Scott Drew. It’s funny, because I shared that sentiment a couple years ago on IC when people were talking him up as a potential replacement for Hubert, and posters jumped down my throat, telling me I was wrong to think he was anything less than a great coach. Now it’s nearly unanimous on IC that he would be a bad hire. I feel vindicated.
Yeah yeah…even a blind squirrel…;);)

Serious question: What qualities or absence in quality does coach possess to create those types of performances? I would default to not being able to to make consistently strong in-game adjustments.
Not being prepared. Not adjusting for the specific opponent.

Ben McC does have a great resume

4 national championships at D2

12 straight conf titles at NW Miss and Drake

In his first year at Iowa, 1st Elite 8 for them since 1989

There is a level of intensity that some coaches always seem to be able to tap into and I’ve never gotten the sense Davis knows how to do that. Too many timeouts were called only to be followed by a bad shot, a turnover, or a dumb foul rather than a cohesive determination to execute a play or get a defensive stop. To be clear, I think it’s better to coach players up to find that extra effort within themselves and bring it out in their teammates by example but absent that, sometimes the coach needs to light a fire under their asses. Hubert never seemed to carry any matches or tinder with him.

I get that people wanted this done quickly but I also think there's a lot of catastrophizing going on here and on IC and 247 - I'm hoping we can announce a hire by the end of the week and hopefully it's someone everyone can rally around

Roy agreed to return to CH on April 13, 2003.

Of course there was no transfer portal then.
No, but the same process of waiting for the NCAAT to play out and for coaches to make decisions and contracts to get worked out.

Hiring a new coach is likely a decade+ decision (unless we end up with Donovan), an easy error to make is valuing the early part of the portal in year 1 and rushing the process.

McCollum or Byington would be great hires.

Oldas shared on IC that Stevens was in contact (might have even said he initiated it) with UNC before the VCU game. Said that the Stevens family were the ones that basically put the brakes on it.

And Roy was walking in to a locker room stocked with Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants and Jawad Williams.
Yep. If Veesaar decides he’s going pro but everyone else decided they were going to stay, our two best returning players would be Jarin Stevenson and Derek Dixon.

I'm guessing you mean Stevens?

I agree. As I said in a previous post, people just don’t know how to be patient with regard to receiving information anymore. Because we have constant access to information outlets and constant access to discussions about the info we are waiting on, we expect instant gratification rather than realistic timelines.

But I do understand why the existence of the portal (and its timeline) leads to some panic nowadays.

I get that, as well.

The NCAA really ought to push the official portal opening back another week or so. I doubt it would help with tampering or kids unofficially committing in any real way, but it would make the calendar work better.

I'm skeptical about the 'rally around' possibility. It isn't normal for everyone to be satisfied even in the best situation (save the Return of Roy I suppose) but we are pretty clearly a very fractured fan base right now. Sure, there'll likely be a short honeymoon period but from what I've witnessed over the past 5 years I don't expect that to last very long at all.

So the portal opens April 7th and that's when players can officially enter but once a player enters they have months to decide where to go right? I get that the top top players get grabbed up quickly but let's say we get a really good coach - for sake of argument let's say its Billy Donovan - we'd still have plenty of time to grab enough decent players to be competitive next season - especially in a crappy ACC

Well there is the (belated) Stevens rumor I asked for.

Offer Ms Stevens an adjunct law school teaching position
or

Brad needs to do what Rocky did at beginning of Rocky 4 "There's no Easy Way Out" :-)
