Man, can you imagine. How many NFL coaches, GM's, scouts, etc. tried their damndest for 20 years to figure out how to derail the Bill Belichick machine, and all it really took was some 24-year-old tail?

"Former President Ronald Reagan once coined the phrase, "If you're explaining, you're losing." Right now, Bill Belichick and North Carolina are losing.

On Wednesday, North Carolina released a statement from Belichick explaining his side of the story on the controversy currently surrounding Belichick and, by extension, the program. And in case you've somehow missed it, the controversy is the Belichick Camp's behavior in what was supposed to be a softball interview for CBS Sunday Morning. In an 8-minute interview that was supposed to do nothing more than occupy people while they downed their Sunday morning coffee has now somehow become a 4-day story, simply because Belichick and his girlfriend Jordon Hudson refused to answer a simple question as to how they met.

As Belichick attempts to play the victim -- again, with CBS Sunday Morning! -- some context:

1) Belichick can request that an interview stay on a certain topic, but just because Belichick requests it doesn't mean CBS has to honor it.
2) The personal lives of public figures is often a gray area, but it's not reasonable to expect photos your girlfriend voluntarily shared on a public Instagram page to be off-limits.
3) As a veteran of many interviews, Belichick knows full well CBS will edit down a 35-minute interview into a single 8-to-10 minute segment.

Meanwhile, The Athletic reported Wednesday that a North Carolina season of Hard Knocks was at one point hours away from an announcement until Hudson's involvement led NFL Films to back away at the last minute.

Within this statement, Belichick confirms he is in a professional relationship with his 24-year-old significant other, and by releasing this statement on its own letterhead, UNC says it tacitly approves of this relationship.

But even all my context above is unnecessary. As an 8-minute interview has somehow become a 4-day story, Belichick finds himself squarely on the wrong side of Reagan's Law, and the University of North Carolina is right alongside him."

Bill and Jordon better hope CBS stops at this statement and doesn't have any unreleased footage that they decide to release.

They aren't going to release any unreleased footage. This isn't the president accusing them of a crime. They will never get another interview again if they stab BB like that.

Is it true that BB has been open about meeting Jordon in Palm Beach in 2021? If so, that's all you need to know. Case closed. If BB hasn't been open about that, then we would get into the stuff about whether BB had a reasonable expectation of not being asked about her.

Here's my imagined reconstruction of events:

BB: I've got an interview with CBS about my book. Wanna be there?
Jordon: Of course. I don't want them to ask about me.
BB: I'll tell the publicist not to ask anything except about the book
Jordon: Thank you. I really, really don't want our laundry aired in public.
BB [calls publicist]: Could you please make sure CBS understands that I'm only going to talk about the book
Publicist: Sure, sure, no problem. [Hangs up] That's not the way it works. He knows that. I'll just Mattis this request here.

Maybe, maybe not. CBS is having their journalistic credibility attacked by the greatest football coach of all time in a very public manner. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest for them to say, "okay, here's the unreleased footage. The public can decide for themselves."

If it is true that they met on a plane on the way to Palm Beach in 2021, I can't fathom why that would have been such a difficult answer. It also doesn't explain why TMZ's sources at CBS apparently leaked that she held up the interview multiple times, including once for over half an hour because she stormed out.

This ain't Belichick's first rodeo with the media, but it certainly is Hudson's. And she has completely failed herself, her boyfriend, and now her boyfriend's employer very publicly by allowing what should be a non-issue (assuming they met on a plane as they claim) explode into a public relations spectacle.

UNC is now getting dragged by quite literally every single prominent media source- sports and non-sports alike- that I've seen. Maybe it will blow over quickly, maybe it won't. Belichick hasn't exactly endeared himself to anyone in the media over the last 2 decades, and the media buys ink by the barrel. It has already become a feeding frenzy that has garnered far more attention than any of us should want on UNC or our football program for what are completely non-football related reasons. What happens if some enterprising investigative journalist successfully uncovers the fact that they did not in fact meet on a plane to Palm Beach in 2021, but that they met on a sugar daddy site or she was a high-end escort or something? That is not at all out of the realm of possibility at this point.

I truly don't care with whom, what, and how Belichick is getting his rocks off these days, but I do care that the person with whom he is doing so is creating tons of headaches, negative publicity, and possibly worse for UNC.

And now people see why it actually does matter that he has a girlfriend that's almost 50 years younger than him.

Agreed,

I feel kind of bad and guilty because I know I'm harping on it incessantly on this thread, and I know (and respect/understand) that not everyone shares my concern. But man, it's just leaving me with quite the feeling of unease.

It becomes a spectacle off the field and that can affect the program and results on the field.

Looks like it’s Bill’s word versus that of CBS. Hard to imagine that CBS would have concocted this whole saga out of nowhere and for no reason, but it’s water under the bridge at this point either way. It has been a bad look for Bill, a bad look for Hudson, and a bad look for UNC- and two of those three things need not happen again if we are paying him $10 million to represent our university, and the third *shouldn’t* happen but ultimately it’s something over which UNC does not have control.

Also, and I can speak with a particular bit of expertise on this very specific part, but the fact that the statement from Bill came from UNC’s University Comms office- not from the Football program, not from Bill himself, and not from the athletics department – is an indicator that it’s being addressed and dealt with at the very highest level of the university, most likely because there are some powerful and influential people at UNC who are not happy with what’s been going on.
Unfortunately, this idiotic episode has made some national news outlets. Of course modern media is all about "gotcha!" moments and the national sports media hasn't seemed to like UNC since the whole never-ending NCAA investigation, but no doubt there are some higher-ups at UNC who are concerned about how all this looks. Honestly, the sooner football season gets here the better. At least then the focus will be on what we're doing on the field, good or bad.

Especially one who apparently now sees herself as his publicity/public relations manager. I wonder if that is the "professional" side of their relationship that Belichick was talking about. His private life is his business, but if they're going to keep doing interviews like this then the reality is that it's going to be everybody's business in this social media age. As I posted earlier, the sooner that the football season starts and people can focus on what's happening on the field, the better.
