There is truth to this, but there are also plenty of Professor Jay Smith’s out there who want to keep UNC football down. And there are also BoG members who have sports loyalties that blind them when it comes to good administration. Those people are a problem too - especially when it comes to conference realignment.
Oh yeah, for sure, and really those folks are what I mean by it being an internal institutional problem versus there being legitimate outside entities that are successfully keeping UNC football down.

I'm definitely not without bias and I recognize that 100%. I was a Butch Davis guy and I am still incredibly irritated at the how the University handled the whole fiasco in 2010. I know it's been 15 years and I know I should get over it, but that was the point in time at which I was in the program, and it was such a chaotic shitshow, and so many folks's lives got turned upside down because the University didn't have the testicular fortitude to stand behind its employees and its student-athletes. People can feel that Coach Davis wasn't living up to his potential (I disagree, of course) and that he should have had better control of John Blake (with which I agree wholeheartedly)- but the way that the University just completely surrendered to the NCAA without it really even firing a shot (or even having the ability to fire a shot) has always stuck with me.

I wasn't fond of the Mack Brown 2.0 hire because I thought that we were getting a guy who had long ago lost his fastball who was selfishly trying to revive his own career and legacy. And I'm not fond of the Belichick hire for many of the same reasons, among others. I think that UNC would be much better served by pouring this kind of investment into the program but with someone younger and fierier, like Glenn Schumann. I know he doesn't have 6 Super Bowl trophies or anything, but he's spent his entire career so far around Nick Saban and Kirby Smart, and has actually coached and recruited in college football. THAT's the kind of hire I want to see UNC make. I want us to stop our obsession trying to win the damn press conference or SportsCenter like we did with Mack and Belichick, and instead try to hire the *next* Mack Brown or Bill Belichick- and actually invest in him.

I mostly agree with what you are saying.

South Carolina was one of the worst ever “big time” college football programs EVER before Spurrier (same for Florida).

I disagree that d00k basketball was never ALL ABOUT K.

Go look at d00k basketball’s Wiki page…..hard to tell that d00k was highly successful before K.

I hope that if the Belichik experiment is successful, UNC follows that up with immediate and continued success - things that Florida nor South Carolina did.
Agree. You need to look no further than K's never ending "swan song" 2022 season as evidence that it was ALL ABOUT K. That's why our ruining it for HIM was so damn fun.

Doubtful.
Well, Jay Smith is especially loathsome, and there are certainly some extremely pro-football UNC faculty (my father was an example) but football seems to be an especially prime target for a significant percentage of the faculty. Not that those people really have the power to keep UNC football down (to CFord's point, UNC manages to do that all by itself), but there was also some truth to Crum's statement that UNC wanted to be Harvard five days a week and Oklahoma on Saturday

agreed. i think there are exceedingly less and less of the jay smith types trying to do full fledged battle with the AD. they've got much bigger problems on their hands lately.

do agree with calheel that the BOG folk with wolpfack ties and general ABC attitudes are a problem. a bigger problem than the nerdy professor types.

Yep - an overwhelming number of enemies on the BOG.

It seemed like the South Carolina Spurriers to me rather than the South Carolina Gamecocks. When he left, the Gamecocks were back where they started.
Which means Spurrier was wildly successful. How many coaches in the last 50 years have transformed a program to the extent that they go from average to elite and stay there?

UNC would be thrilled to get Spurrirer-like results from Belichick.

I wonder how many of the Jordon shirts they’ve actually sold?

I’d also read an article that interviewed folks who had purchased one about their life choices that led to such a decision.
Ramrouser is gonna single-handedly keep The Shrunken Head in business on Franklin

I'll ask the same question here. Are we gonna be any good this year?
Schedule is easier than pudding pie so we may win a bunch of games but I don’t really see us being any good. I’m not sure that this roster is any better than the one we had last year, and you could make an argument that it’s worse. Also not convinced that our answer at QB is a dude who was just playing at South Alabama last year, no matter what kind of highlight videos he put on film against whatever defense Appalachian State pretended to field. Still, I’d say we are probably a 7-5 type team. In other words, same shit, different year, same as it ever was for Carolina Football!

Bingo

Well Bubba agreed with you but some BOT folks wanted Bill
The positive thing is Bill is likely building our program up bigger and better-hopefully the nexy guy in a couple of years will actually be a young energetic recruiting machine/Coach
