It’s just a formula. No one is making a subjective judgment as part of the analysis. It really is just trash and detracts from the quality of the site. The best advice is to completely ignore it.
Couldn’t agree more, with every single word. The most damning things of all, to me, was 1. watching some of our players loaf at various points throughout the season(saw it in the first game against TCU, we saw it against UCF, we saw it against Clemson, then we saw it against Wake Forest and NC State) and 2. the stunning lack of discipline. Of all of the things that I expected we would or would not see out of a Bill Belichick coached team, it never even remotely once crossed my mind in the preseason that we would ever have to worry about effort, or that we would ever see a complete abandonment of basic fundamentals (we had drives with multiple substitution infractions) and maintaining composure (the drive killing or drive extending personal fouls).
He also would've had to rebuild the DL, LB and secondary via the portal since Echols, every DL but Beau, Leroy and Tyler Thompson, the two starting safeties from last yr and Huzzie all graduated.

Yeah the offensive scheme (if you can even call it a scheme) was ridiculously bad, but in theory that’s something that you can change just by hiring an actual offensive coordinator.
Probably about the same, given that Mack was basically snoozing his way through games and seemed to have no fire in his belly to improve. OTOH, he was also making about half of what Belichick is, so we'd probably still have a similar record, but for a lot less money. So there's that, I guess.
If we hadn't fired Mack, I don't think he would have fared any better. The roster would probably have been even worse because the underwhelming results had eliminated his recruiting ability, and he completely lost the locker room with his post-JMU antics. He'd probably have had a ceiling of 4 wins with a very real possibility of a 2018 repeat.
Yep. I said yesterday or the day before, quite literally every single UNC Football coach in my lifetime of going on 3.5 decades now -including, and maybe even especially, John Bunting- would have had this team, against this schedule, in a bowl game at an absolute bare minimum. The fact that we did not even come remotely close to qualifying for a bowl game is an indictment on how much of an unmitigated disaster this year was. It’s actually hard to even truly quantify how bad it was.
In this world Max Johnson would've been medically retired by his 4th full game after Trevyeon Green matadors for the ntheenth time, so are you saying Gio and the OL somehow would've been a much better vs Cal, UVA, Wake, etc? Would our players have been faster under Mack? Please ensure you include the fact that half the team wasn't here til summer and that our top-2 centers missed the first month of the season.
As I've said multiple times, Gio made a perfectly serviceable OL look much much worse because of his bad pocket movement, slow processing, and, until the last month of the season, inability to get the ball out quickly even when he knew where to go with it. Under Mack, one of the two freshmen who were here for spring ball and had a better understanding of his offense undoubtedly gets the nod at quarterback and mitigates that problem immensely.
Any idea if this is total contract amount? By that I mean, Gio's contract was 2 million, but spread over two years (I believe), and so only takes away a million from the pot / year. If some of these contracts are multi-year deals then that number wouldn't be what's paid this upcoming year.

General manager Michael Lombardi shared with boosters in late September that he believed the 2026 recruiting class would include players who are the cornerstone of the rebuild. The financial investment matches that opinion, as spending on UNC’s 2026 high school recruiting class is nearing $10 million, according to sources.
Given the narrow window for a dramatic turnaround, that’s a substantial price tag for incoming freshmen who must navigate a difficult transition to the college game and therefore may not be ready to compete at a high level in 2026. There’s a significant need for money to be spent in both player retention and the transfer portal, which will be open for 15 days from Jan. 2-16."
Exactly what I and others have been saying and about which we've been expressing skepticism. It's vindicating to see if validated by someone of Greg's expertise and connections.
Mack fielded the worst defense in the P4 for most of his tenure. Without Sam and Drake to bail him out his record would have been much worse. This team had nobody like Sam or Drake. What makes you think the defense wouldn't have been absolutely putrid like it always was under his leadership?
