SEC schools have a leg up on the ACC. Seriously. Did you all just not see what happened in the ACC SEC Challenge? The ACC was slaughtered. And it's going to get worse moving forward. We need to stop acting like its an even playing field with SEC/Big Ten schools. Investing in Belichick helps with that. It's not about who is the best coach anymore. It's about who can bring in the talent. If you honestly think that the other names being bandied around are going to be able to get the talent that Belichick gets, for however long he is here, then I honestly don't know what to tell you. He'll also bring in a staff to do the vast majority of the high energy stuff - recruiting, practice, x's and o's. He'd come as a figurehead, a motivator, and a disciplinarian.
I said if they are willing to pay for it.

You're right about the disparity between ACC and P2 schools. But the coaching aspect is one of the primary reasons to hire BB. He's not a Mack Brown type figurehead who can't put together a game plan and needs his assistants to do that for him. He's one of the best defensive minds in the NFL over the past few decades. So I think describing him like Mack 3.0 is incorrect, ie a figurehead who just oversees the program. He will likely need some help on the recruiting side of things, but a lot of that is getting outsourced these days to GM's and staff at the football factories. If he can get NIL guarantees his name and resume should take care of the player acquisition piece. What he brings that's valuable in my mind is coaching acumen, player development and rolodex. Something we've been missing lately.

Oh. I agree. I'm saying that he is those things at the very least.

Oh, I agree with all of that - my point is that, at the very least, he is the things that I mentioned. And, by itself, those things are enough to justify the hire. Any of the above intangibles are on top of all of that. I'm just exhausted by the negativity of the fanbase. But, and this is critical, part of what I believe he truly will bring is a world class staff, and that the burden of the heavy lifting will not be on him, and him alone.

Are we sure about the player development part? Developing an 18 or 19 yr old is way different from developing an undrafted free agent gym rat or someone who slid to the 3rd day of the draft. I suspect he'll want to go heavy on Jrs/Sr already "developed" via the portal for this reason.

I think "player development" means several things. One is helping a player develop over years, but another central part of player development is building a culture of behavior - and that type of "player development" is greatly helped by a heavy dependence on Jr./Sr. portal transfers.

I can’t help thinking this is a terrible idea and will end in a complete disaster. Elevating football to this level of importance, throwing an excess of university resources at it, laying out the red carpet for a spent monomaniacal misanthrope. Yay.

You are either in the game or you aren't. If we aren't willing to pay the price to play then we might as well fold up shop on football and stay in the ACC with the wake, dook and ncst's of the world.

With that attitude just go the intramural route or something similar.

As an outside observer and KU football fan, I think there's low risk of it going poorly. I think the floor of this move is having an average season. BB would likely attract quite a bit of top talent based on who he is. He knows the Xs and Os, of course. Both those things combined would equal enough wins to be average.

But, I understand as fans you want the best and aren't thinking that average possibly is acceptable.

The national media interest is sort of wild to me. I mean, I get it is about Belichick but still something to behold.

You've got to spend money to make money. Every serious P4/P2 program will adopt the same model in the next two years.

At some point, I would not be totally surprised to see universities sell their football programs to investors. That will allow the university to get all of the benefit of football with none of the headaches. And players could then focus full time on minor league football with the right to get a college education when their playing days are over (and they can focus full time on school). It will be a win-win for everybody.

Sure, why not … too bad we didn’t win the natty in ‘98 with Guthridge taking over for Dean to fill this out.

Yeah the current system will only continue to professionalize, but the endpoint could get pretty messy. Especially since the actual revenue pie is not being shared with the players.
