Have heard some people in recruiting circles speculate about #2. More than likability, there is a feeling that he relates well to certain type of recruits/families (been suggested families strong in the faith). Don't know how much stock to put in that.
Well, that could be something related to 2.

I guess we can’t fully exclude it.

His first season wasn't even a good one for half the season. It was good for 4 weeks, and only because Manek got hot and Caleb Love was hitting some ridiculous shots. They were on the bubble before they beat dook at Cameron. The offense they were running is still the same one they have now relying on 3s and mostly 1 on 1 shots off the dribble.
So what?

I will say I was always puzzled by two things in that first season. Not using the bench and not reigning in the bad shots Love and Davis would fire up (never seen so many contested midrange jumpers early in the shot clock). Think that set a terrible precedent for the second season.

Caleb is still taking those shots. Sometimes the coach can only do so much. Maybe using the bench would have helped put discipline in Caleb, but maybe not.

Totally agree on the use of the bench. I’ll concede that as an outside observer, I’m not necessarily in a position to determine who should get minutes, but it seemed to me he could have used his bench more and used it differently. And considering how little he used the bench, I don’t understand how Justin McKoy got any playing time.

So it wasn't even really 1.5 good seasons. More like one good season and one good month.
Amen. There's a lot of "He's had two good seasons." Nope. In 2022, we were planted firmly on the bubble until that Duke win and then a couple of wins in the ACCT bounced us in as an 8 seed.

I know...I've seen some of those Arizona games.
Coach Smith would have nipped that in the bud...thats for sure . So it always surprised me that he didn't do that the first year. I mean my man shot 38% from 2 (and 36% from 3); for the record he didn't shoot that great under Roy, but Roy would yank him for bad shots. He was jacking like there's no tomorrow in Hubert's first year. And I know the options on the bench weren't great but that's one of those things that you have to set the boundaries on early in the season.

You know, prior to that Duke game, I think we were safely off the bubble. Prior to that game, we had “only” 8 losses on the season and we were second in the conference. Even if we had lost that game at Duke and our first ACCT game, we would have been 22-10 as of selection Sunday, and would have finished tied for 4th in the conference. And we had won 4 in a row going into that game at Duke (and 6 out of our last 7). All that most likely would have been good enough to make the NCAAT. Not that much of the season prior to that game at Duke was all that fun to watch, however.

Notice I said 1.5 outta 3.5 seasons... meaning a full 2 were crapola. This season looks like it's over... but it isn't. I'm not saying 1.5 > 2... he's had more bad than good so I'll agree with you there. However, no matter what we say here, or what we agree on, the facts are: Hubert has won 91 out of 132 games. A winning % of 69% against a very good SOS (look it up). A coach of the year honor; a final four/final game berth, a ACC Reg Season Championship, A Naismith Award Semifinalist... vanquished K...

Even though we've had more crapola than good under Hubert... he's still gotta chance to see another season. Whether we like it or not. He's got a chance.

All that said, there's also a chance he will be asked for his resignation too...

And Roy yanking him did what exactly? I mean, you're not wrong in general, but some guys can't be fixed.

I think the difference is that Dean would have had someone else on the bench to step up if Caleb didn't get some discipline.

There is no way we were "safely" off the bubble before the dook game.

Even with the dook win and an ACCT win, we got an 8-seed. The ACC got 5 teams in seeded 2, 8, 10, 11, 11.

If we don't win that dook game and we lose in the first round of the ACCT, we're squarely on the bubble. I do think we'd have ended up making it in, but we would have been right in the middle of the bubble discussion.

Just read that Dook NIL $ this year - just on basketball is $24.3M. What are we spending? $3M. Let's get a General Manager then complain. We are not in the ballgame yet... we will soon.

Overheard in the handshake line after the dook game: Dookie: "So what are they giving you?" Carolina player: "I get a 4 year scholly and $75,000." Dookie: "Dude! Slavery days are over! Get outta there!" Carolina guy: "I know, right? I'm just mailing in the rest of this season and jumping in the Portal ASAP"
