How is Duke managing to continue to get great additions? Is there NIL program that much better than UNC’s program? If so, why?
They produce several 1st round picks every single season. That's worth a lot in the eyes of recruits, I imagine.

It's still early and there is time to turn things around, but if we miss the tournament again Davis will have a warm seat going into next season. We can parse out the limitations he has been dealt, but this is the second team in four years that looks to be underperforming its talent level. He gets a lot of leeway not only because he crushed the soul of the dookies and ended the Roach K era in ignominy, but also because of his ties to the program and his character. That said, he's in a job at the top of a sport that is measured in wins and losses, so excuses only carry so far. I think most of us want him to succeed.

I think it's that we don't produce NBA players anymore. Freshmen and transfers with hopes of playing in the NBA are aware of this fact.
This is it. Folks look at the NBA and see 3 s first, layups, then FTs. The long 2 is no longer a good shot. That's how Bama plays. That's how Auburn plays. That's how dook plays. They want that environment.

I think, as you mentioned, this has a big effect on recruiting.
IIRC, this was dook's issue just a few years ago. Kyrie, Tatum, Ingram, Banchero, and now McCain have made a big difference, but that pendulum could easily swing back the other direction.

ETA -- Sorry, edited dook's name in honor of the thread.

The big difference was that they made those 3’s and open layups. It wasn’t anything mind blowing.
I’ve seen much better offense from other teams this year, but if we’re focusing on last night’s game, Bama got much better looks than UNC. Which could have contributed to them making more than UNC did. Bama was running good offense (probably better than typical due to horrible defense and defensive fundamentals on the part of UNC), creating good looks for their teammates. UNC was doing a lot of dribble-drive pull-ups, all over the floor. The high ball screen was pretty much ineffective all game.

Everything looks better when shots are going in. UNC missed a ton of open looks from all over the court.

I think our NIL problems partly stem from we expected players to do NIL similar to what Bacot did. He did a lot of sponsorship and promotional deals and made a lot of money that way. That is sort of what NIL was expected to be. And we pitched to players how we would help them with contacts and how to leverage their likeness. NIL quickly morphed into strictly pay for play and we were slow to adjust.

I'm surprised this doesn't get mentioned more than it does, but we don't produce 1st round picks. If we're offering similar NIL $, but the other school has a recent track record of getting freshmen and transfers into the 1st round, I know which one I'd be choosing.

The knock on UNC is that they expect you to be a "program guy" - i.e. come in, work, earn your way, and your draft stock will suffer as a result. They also typically don't feature one-and-done freshmen. I get there's this "chicken/egg" dynamic going on with this, too - do we not produce OAD's because we don't get the best freshmen or do we not get the best freshmen because we don't produce 1st rounders?

Either way, the perception is reality - 5 star freshmen come here and struggle while others go to Duke or Kentucky, flourish, become high draft picks, rinse and repeat.

I don't know that there are any good answers on the roster for what ails this team. But I do know that the staff needs to feature Ian and Drake moving forward. They're the two (along with Seth) who do things that jump off the screen and getting them both into the 1st round this year needs to happen. Then Hubert needs to attend the draft with them in June. Make a damn show of it, too, a la Calipari.
I think part of us not having many 1st rounders lately is based on who we’ve recruited lately. In the previous 3 seasons (high school classes of 2021-2023), we haven’t recruited anyone who was considered a strong NBA prospect. Cadeau was the only 5-star during that time, but with his reclassification, size, and playing style (pass first; not a great shooter), I don’t think it was widely expected that he would be a first round pick after his freshman year.

in 2021, we had Day’ron Sharpe who was a OAD first rounder. In 2020, we had Cole Anthony who was a OAD first rounder. In 2019, we had Coby White and Nas Little, who were OAD first rounders, and Cam Johnson, who was a first rounder.

Of course 2021 and before, guys were playing under Roy. Hubert didn’t inherit or land guys who were expected to be first rounders when they came out of high school, with the exception Caleb Love (who he inherited from Roy). Armando and RJ were-5 stars, but Armando is an old school big that is no longer a high priority among NBA teams and RJ is too small to be a highly desirable NBA prospect. Drake and Ian will be the first real test (maybe Cadeau).

Yes, you're absolutely correct. However, are you trying to say that UNC got even close to the same amount of good shots as Bama did last night?
