The other thing I've been thinking about for HD is if he's given another year to turn it around...what happens on the NIL front?

We're going to lose some talent in this off-season, there's no doubt about it. And we don't really have much immediate impact talent inside to worry about losing or keeping. And our recruits aren't really the immediate impact type.

Which means we're going to have to do major work in the portal.

But what happens when HD says, "If you want me to turn this around, I need twice the NIL money I had last off-season. What I had last year wasn't enough."

Do you give him one last year to make a big change unless you're also going to give him major additional resources (read: NIL money) to make it happen? Or do you give him an extra year with no extra resources and simply let the chips fall where they may? If it's the latter, how does that play out from a PR perspective?
I don't think its an NIL issue. HD has matched offers for many targets. They, for whatever reason, don't want to come here.

That's a very kind portrait of Hubert's years at Carolina.

Another way of saying it...

2021 -2022 - Bubble team, NCAAT 8-seed, mediocre season salvaged by terrific end of season run
Yeah, the end of this season was so great, it's easy to forget we sitting squarely on the bubble before the Duke game at Cameron. I think that was a must win and then we had to win one or two games in the ACCT to get to a comfortable position.

I think we've had some NIL issues, but I don't think it's the only major issue.

My comment is more about the future...what do we do if we end up in a "make or break" season for HD and he wants to push a lot of NIL chips into the game. Do we have it do so and do we let HD have it to work with? And if the answer to either of those questions is "no", how do you give HD another season to figure it out without the NIL resources to do so?

I think Hubert has to ask for this sort of monetary commitment 1. If he wants to keep his job and 2. If he wants Carolina to continue being an elite CBB destination.

Re: NIL this past year, it seems like a lot of schools offer cash straight up. Carolina seemed to get into that game this past year, but they also continued to sell developing players’ value after signing via brand deals. The latter pitch of investment may not be as viable as the staff thought.

Bringing BB into our football team shows me the PTB are willing to invest in cash up front NIL along with upcoming rev share. Bottom line, Hubert has to advocate for himself and the program. His disposition as a coach doesn’t seem to lend itself towards this type of lobbying, so we’ll see what happens I guess.

If we do decide to move on from Davis, I think we should seriously consider an NBA AC (or HC if willing) and go the Belichick route with basketball.

I think there's a new sheriff in town - Chancellor Lee Roberts. He's a business minded leader of the University who (along with others) completely changed the landscape for athletics at UNC with the Belichick hire + NIL commitments. He's going to view HD's underperforming team(s) as a drag on UNC bb's revenue and act accordingly. Like others have said, adapt (fast) to the current realities or die.

HD probably deserves another season with a bump in NIL budget unless the season implodes.

Separate thought: do we have a basketball GM?

I wonder if Davis would do better if allowed to handle to the coaching duties and have a GM handle talent evaluation and recruiting.

Your second to last paragraph is a great point. A crucial part of a college coach’s skill set in this new era is being able to lobby and get alignment with the PTB behind the scenes. To be fair to Hubert, what exactly that looks like wasn’t quite as obvious back in April 2021 when he was hired. He already did “raise the alarm” about NIL a few months ago, so we’ll see how he navigates that this next offseason.

I am getting so I prefer to record the games and only watch them if the Heels win instead of watching it live, unless they are playing Duke or in the NCAA tournament.
This has been me for years. I get entirely too emotional during games. During a Carolina/dook game years ago, I was so worked up, my dog had a massive accident in the living room. Ever since then, I’ve recorded and watched later (with a few exceptions)

To be honest, I think if you are going to cut ties with HD, it'd be better to do it before the end of the season. It's next-to-impossible for a "deadman walking" to recruit either high school players or portal players. Especially when it's clear that HD is already not able to get them to commit to him. I just don't see how you can give him another year to figure it out if this year continues as is, or even slightly improves.

Good point. In football, we did that with Mack - gave him the dead man walking year after 5 years of not hitting it out of the park with Howell/Maye.

Yeah, beating dook at K's last home game and the run in the tourney and beating dook again in the Final 4 was an awesome ride. But it really was all about Manek getting hot and Love hitting some ridiculous shots at the right time. I think some forget how that season was until the tourney run and the Heels were close to not even being in it.
Sure, but a lot of people also seemed to have forgotten what happened last season before the loss to Alabama.

Lee Roberts is a dookie. He’ll probably try to sabotage the basketball program (as a dookie, he doesn’t care about football, so he’d have no problem with UNC’s success on that end).

Tubby Smith at Kentucky was pushed out with a 76% win percentage, an NCAA championship, and never missing the NCAA tournament.
That was a bad look.

He wasn’t technically fired. UK sold their soul to Shady.

We had a good season last year, but it was a bit of a mixed bag from the end of January onwards. While we did win the ACC regular season, we weren't playing our best basketball in the final month of games and underachieved a bit in March. I loved the win in Durham, but we were extremely fortunate that Cormac had the game of his life, because nobody else (except probably Ingram) played well. Although State did go on a great run in the NCAA Tourney, we still should have beaten them in the ACCT Final - especially given that they had played so many games in consecutive days, and the fact we had not won the ACCT Final since 2016. We also struggled to beat Pitt the day before that. We played well the first two NCAAT games, granted. I think Hubert's player usage decisions against Alabama - particularly in the second half - were questionable and may have hurt our chances.
