So not very long ago.Just added to my original post re: Drake Powell, Elliot Cadeau, and GG Jackson.
The reporting is UNC’s offer was bigger. He committed to Uk. Went in a trip to UNC and liked it. Got the UNC offer and it was more. UK was given option to match. They did not.
True. Think he was 5 when he committed (on 247), but still Top 10.Ian Jackson. He was ranked no. 2 when he committed in January 2023.
Drake eventually made his way into the top 10 but wasn’t there when he committed (and finished his high school career just outside of it).
Stephenson who reclassified and went to Alabama , also from Pittsboro and with UNC connections, was once thought to be the same.Drake was always a UNC lean I thought
Still think they should've brought in Evans too
When did he commit to UK?The reporting is UNC’s offer was bigger. He committed to Uk. Went in a trip to UNC and liked it. Got the UNC offer and it was more. UK was given option to match. They did not.
Yeah those were the last four guys to come to Chapel Hill who finished their high school careers ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes.True. Think he was 5 when he committed (on 247), but still Top 10.
Taking a look at the last ten years:
Drake and Cadeau were just outside top 10.
I guess technically we got GG to commit before he switched.
List is Ian Jackson, Caleb Love, Cole Anthony and Nasser Little.
Stephenson who reclassified and went to Alabama , also from Pittsboro and with UNC connections, was once thought to be the same.
Reporting from whom? The reporting is UNC’s offer was bigger. He committed to Uk. Went in a trip to UNC and liked it. Got the UNC offer and it was more. UK was given option to match. They did not.
Of course the former players are going to stick up for Hubert. Not saying they don’t have some valid points, but they are also obviously biased in this situation. They’re never going to call out his coaching acumen, even if it’s valid.Y’all keep wringing your hands, but it ain’t the X’s and O’s It’s the Jimmys and Joes.
I’ve read all of your poasts, and I get it. I really do. It's frustrating - and it has been frustrating since Roy's last 2 years. Although we can all admit last year (reg season champs) - and the FF run/K dashing a couple of years ago - was fun as hell!
But it is frustrating for a fan base like UNC to have to weather storms of "the bubble" or not "getting a big from the Portal"; Or not making the NCAAT at all... it sux no doubt.
However, I’ve also listened to all of the podcasts from former players like Joel Berry, Theo, Justin, Raymond, Etc.
I've decided I’ll side with them. I’ll side with Sean, Marcus, Lebo, Coach Davis…
We missed on a portal big. Duh.
Offense? Offense scores plenty - 82.5 per game - good for #20 in the Nation. So, please don't argue about our shooting %'s or how we "stand around and go one v. one all the time". Listen to Theo - he said: "Offense? Under Roy? Secondary Break and Freelance, that was it. Hubert runs way more offense than Roy ever did!" I'll believe Theo, not you guys. Sorry.
It's not the offense, it's the defense and rebounding. And both of those things are "effort" related, along with having some height to guard folks, change the trajectory of shots and to get rebounds.
We're "short" at every position - and did I say we missed on a big?
Finally, we don't have any leaders on the floor or in the locker room. Nary a one. The coaches can try to motivate and encourage all they want, but you need those guys who are actually wearing the jersey to lead - either by example or vocally in the huddle. That person is supposed to be RJ - but that's not in his nature. RJ is the one who needs to take a charge (take a charge, along with "take charge"); he needs to box out and throw an elbow; get in a teammate's face (the way Jordan would with the Bulls). RJ needs to be the one, who after dropping the perfect dime to a teammate - who then fumbles the ball away or misses the dunk - RJ needs to be the one to get in their grill and say: "Man, I'm not throwing you the ball anymore if you're going to do that crap!" These are the types of things a team leader would do. It's tough love, but it needs to happen and it needs to come from someone wearing a jersey.
I’m biased in this situation too.Of course the former players are going to stick up for Hubert. Not saying they don’t have some valid points, but they are also obviously biased in this situation. They’re never going to call out his coaching acumen, even if it’s valid.
For sake of argument let’s say that it’s not on Hubert and his staff to get the team to play with right amount of effort and that the responsibility for that is solely on the players. At the end of the day that still ultimately falls on the coaches, because they are the ones in charge of picking the players that are on the team in the first place. If the players aren’t giving effort or showing enough leadership, then Hubert should have recruited different players.
Professional sports have their own personnel departments, so there are going to be times when the teams have limitations and it’s through no fault of the HC. College coaches don’t have that excuse. They are the CEO of the entire program, and the buck always stops with them when it comes to the results, for better or worse. There is simply no other way to slice it.
If you are not using efficiency stats, you are a basketball troglodyte. Total offense is a meaningless stat because it is so influenced by pace. It's not the offense, it's the defense and rebounding. And both of those things are "effort" related, along with having some height to guard folks, change the trajectory of shots and to get rebounds.
Per KenPom, our offensive efficiency is 46
The team is too small on defense to switch everything. It just allows more situations where a smaller defender is on a bigger player for the other team. The team is also too small and doesn't have the shooters it needs if RJ isn't hitting for the offense Hubert runs, which really isn't a structured offense at all. He isn't coaching a defense or offense that fits the team he has.If you are not using efficiency stats, you are a basketball troglodyte. Total offense is a meaningless stat because it is so influenced by pace.
Per KenPom, our offensive efficiency is 46 and our defensive efficiency is 48. Neither is close to UNC level. So we very much have a problem with our offense and our defense right now.
“Basketball troglodyte” made me laugh so hard. Great work. Totally agree with youIf you are not using efficiency stats, you are a basketball troglodyte. Total offense is a meaningless stat because it is so influenced by pace.
