What’s the likelihood this turns out to be true on a few accounts, but grossly explained by mass panic?

Admittedly, I’ve only read a couple of articles.
That is how UFO sighting "waves" - like the famous wave of UFO sightings over Washington, DC in the summer of 1952 - were explained. They were basically mass hysteria fed by press publicity and people seeing ordinary objects like stars, meteors, airplanes, etc. and turning it into something creepy or sinister when it really wasn't.

“Something strange is going on and for some reason they don’t want to tell the people and they should…”

I agree, but the way to explain people saying that they gave up social media in a post on a message board is this understanding.

I guess we can say there are levels of social media, or something like that.
Right. No one is referring to anonymous online message boards when colloquially using the term social media. Forums like this probably fall under a subcategory of social media, but I think we can all agree that there are fundamental differences between zzlpolitics.com and mainstream social media platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.
