I get where y’all are coming from on this, but think about it this way: these guys have little to no control over whether automation takes their job. In an ideal world, automation would be used to lessen the workflow on everyone and create a more equitable society.

Under our current system, automation is a tool for the boss to reduce costs and fire workers. Is it any surprise that these guys would be hostile to automation under these conditions?

They’re not luddites, despite some previous assertions otherwise. They just want to protect their families and livelihoods. Completely understandable IMO.
I agree it’s understandable, but from a policy perspective, it’s a losing proposition. Nobody except the Amish ride horses to the grocery store anymore. And 20 years from now, no matter what happens with this strike, our ports will be almost entirely automated.

I’d say they’re more concerned with their immediate well being than what the future of our ports look like.

I get it. They’re throwing themselves in front of the steamroller of technological progress in the hope it will stop before it runs them over. And maybe it will, for a moment. But any success will be fleeting, and if it does impact the election (and to be clear, I don’t think it will), it will be massively, enormously, catastrophically self-defeating.

No argument from me there. I still have sympathy for them though, same as I do for any worker striking for higher wages and benefits against massive corporate interests.

LBCT - Long Beach Container Terminal. Fully Automated. Has been for a couple of years now. Containers are a bit easier to automate than bulk shipping.

That's who the luddites were. They were literally people who opposed technology because they were losing their jobs and their wages to machines.

But that's not what they are saying. Their immediate well-being is addressed with higher pay. Their concern about automation is forward looking.

I see no evidence that these men are opposed to technology. They are opposed to being exploited and losing their jobs because of automation. Making them seem like backwards anti-technology yokels serves the interests of capital only.

Trump is speaking now in Milwaukee, and whew it's a doozy.

1) inflation at all time high under current admin (not close).
2) Harris wants to knock down buildings and replace them with windowless buildings, for efficiency.
3) He will cut our energy prices in half by end of 2025, "drill baby drill."
4) 10s of millions of migrants are being imported from jails and mental institutions all over the world.
5) He has visited GA and NC to assess hurricane damage. Says biggest problem in NC is loss of communication. He called his buddy Elon and got it fixed that day. Elon likes satellites and rockets you know. It took 15 seconds to go up to his satelite and back down, and just like that, communications were restored.
6) They blamed everyone else for Coronovirus. It didn't come from Italy or France, or monkeys or animals. It came from China, the Wuhan labs, just like I said. Now everybody knows it.
7) The far left liberals say these immigrants aren't hurting anyone. They are, many aren't just killing one, they are killing 5 each. They are coming from the Congo, I don't even know what that is, but they are emptying their jails and sending them here. They make our bad people look like the innocent.
8) I am going to name Elon Musk to head a task force to cut out gov. waste and inefficiencies. He gave me a very warm endorsement because he knows we will lose our country if I don't win. He will save us trillions of dollars.

9) We are on the verge of WW3. I don't want to make predictions, because when I make predictions they always come true.

9) Biden is doing nothing, in fact I don't think he has been able to do anything since he got there. And they keep saying global warming. It rains, it snows, it gets cold, it gets warm, they always say it is global warming. In fact, we have been cooling for awhile lately.

Not sure where he is speaking. No crowd. A split screen shows political groups in booths, maybe a dozen booths. Strange. The Hill on News Nation cut away, he is rambling all over the map.

that last bit about elon is hilarious. "our country"..... the dude is not American, he's just stealing a bunch of our money.

Sorry nyc, I forgot there was a thread for Trump rallies and PC's. I should have looked past first page.

Meh, no worries at all — I try to spread them across multiple threads where relevant to the topic b/c we all get numb to the single thread full of his verbal diarrhea…

🤔 does that mean I am slinging old man 💩 all over the board?

Their immediate concern is increasing costs for Americans.

Not moving to automation in ports is inefficient. It increases costs. It increases energy use - contributing to climate change.
