Mr. Trump’s team saw the moment from Mr. Biden as similar to the occasion when Mrs. Clinton, speaking at a fund-raiser in late summer during the 2016 campaign, condemned half of Mr. Trump’s supporters as belonging in “what I call the basket of deplorables.” She had added, “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

Mr. Trump has repeatedly demonized Democrats, using terms that have included “the enemy within,” “communists,” “Marxists” and “vermin.” He has attacked his critics and threatened some with prosecution if he becomes president again.
… By Tuesday night, the Trump campaign was using the Biden comments to appeal to his supporters. Mr. Trump sent a fund-raising email with the subject line: “You are not garbage! I love you! You are the best our nation has to offer.”

Here’s the thing — I don’t think he intended to say it, and I think the context proves that, and even if it weren’t clear, he provided clarification very quickly thereafter.Iden d

BUT however obvious that seems to me or anyone else, it is also obvious that (a) the Trump campaign and their enablers in right wing media are seizing it as a get out of jail free card opportunity and (b) the mainstream media is also treating it as a major gaffe by Biden.
Hopefully, the truth of it becomes obvious to most potential Harris voters and this fades after another news cycle. But even then damage has been done — undermining the positive news cycle and just basic coverage of Kamala’s closing argument at the Ellipse first and foremost, but also altering the Trump MSG news cycles and creating an opportunity for Both Sides equivocation by swing voters.
Damned frustrating unforced error.

It was pretty clear then that she wasn’t wrong, even if “basket of deplorables” was an awkward and curious turn of phrase. And she intended to say what was said, just like Obama intended to say what he said about clinging to guns and religion and Romney intended to say what he said about the 47%. All those are called gaffes, but they were all intentional statements, clearly articulated, by the actual candidate.
OTOH, Joe clearly stumbled all over his words there and was apparently trying to reframe calling Puerto Ricans “garbage” as the actual garbage behavior, but he blew it. His was a genuine gaffe (and the second one in the last week given his “lock him up” slip recently).
But unlike those other “gaffes” by HRC, Mitt and Obama, Joe isn’t the candidate. Hopefully enough of the voting public gets the distinction and writes it off to “Thank God he isn’t running again”. But we’re in a race where Harris is being held to a zero gaffe tolerance policy by the media and Trump was actually getting serious negative attention (for something he didn’t personally say, which somehow evaded Trump’s diplomatic immunity for all the crazy shit he says every time he gets in front of a microphone), so Joe providing a distraction when Trump’s team was flailing is at best terribly unhelpful at about the worst possible moment.
