In a nutshell, allow me to explain why I am so irritated and annoyed by this whole Belichick situation, beyond the gripes I’ve already made on this thread.
I am annoyed that the University of North Carolina is apparently run by a group of people who always prioritize style over substance. I’m annoyed that after we endured six years of continued mediocrity because we hired an old, out of work football coach who had long ago lost his fastball and was not going to be hired by literally any other school, we then turned around and decided to hire an old, out of work football coach who has long ago lost his fast ball and was not going to be hired by literally any NFL team or any other school. Mack Brown won a national championship, would have won a second one if Colt McCoy hadn’t gotten hurt in the title game against Alabama, and yet – could not get another head football coaching job for five years despite interviewing for several. Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls and could not get the time of day from literally any other NFL franchise. Which is more likely – that UNC was somehow someway going to see something that quite literally no other college or university or professional franchise could see, OR that we are stupid and shortsighted for hiring retread has-beens because we think that a name alone is enough to be able to rekindle that coaches glory years from two decades ago?
I’m annoyed because UNC went for the flash and style over substance, the sizzle over steak, because we are desperate for anyone to pay attention to us in college football. I’m annoyed that politicians got involved with our most recent head football coaching search. I’m annoyed that the political appointments on the board of trustees and in the chancellor‘s office ran their own one man coaching search completely independently of the athletics director. I’m annoyed that we are paying a football coach $10 million per year – double what we were paying Mack Brown!- to currently make John Bunting’s teams look prolific by comparison.
More than anything else, I am annoyed that somehow for some reason the people in charge of leading the university and raising money for the university are apparently so bad at their jobs that the only way that they could convince our benefactors and boosters to pony up money is to go out and hire a name instead of an actual college football coach.
Here is why UNC is always going to suck in football: apparently the only way to get people to give money to support our Football program and to help us compete is to either let them hire their best friend and a golfing buddy (mack Brown) or hire someone famous that they can brag to their other rich buddies at other schools that they could buy (Bill Belichick). If we don’t have donors who are willing to make the same kind of investment that we have just made unless it’s for Bill Belichick, or better yet if we don’t have university leaders or fundraisers who are better able to articulate and sell a vision for significantly stepping up our level of investment for, say, a Matt Campbell or a Jon Sumrall or even a Glenn Schumann- successful, young, *college* coaches- then we are going to continue to toil away in football mediocrity. And we will deserve it.
